Up
Arlo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was younger
She'd come to me in dreams
Her face was hidden
In the mountain streams
Her voice disguised
As the sound of the wind
The rustling of leaves
She would call from within

Chorus:

Wake up, wake up, wake up, she said
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up dead

So many memories
Of those years have passed
Beyond the confusion
That [ thought would last forever
The countless veils
That I wore like clothes
Have been stripped away
Now [ stand here exposed

Chorus

In the night when the moon
Casts no shadows at all
We sat by the fire
As she started to call
Out to all who would hear
That the death of what's dead
Is the birth of what's living
And her words filled my head

Chorus

It's the life that lies sleeping
When you think you're awake
Forever is real
And the rest is just fake
And though volumes are written
On this subject alone

She used three simple words
And she brought it all home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Arlo's song "Up" describe the singer's journey towards self-discovery and enlightenment. As a child, he dreamt of a mysterious woman whose face was hidden in the mountain streams, and whose voice sounded like the rustling of leaves. This woman would speak to him, urging him to wake up and to not live his life in a state of ignorance or confusion. As he grew older, Arlo shed the "countless veils" he had worn like clothes, and came to understand the message that the woman had been trying to convey to him.

The chorus of the song - "Wake up, wake up, wake up, she said, Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up dead" - can be interpreted as a message about the importance of living in the moment and not wasting time on trivial pursuits. The woman's words are a call to action, urging Arlo to wake up from his slumber and embrace all that life has to offer. The second verse of the song speaks of the power of the woman's message, and how it has stayed with Arlo even as he has grown older.

The final verse of the song is perhaps the most profound, as it speaks to the idea that life is not what it seems. The singer notes that "the life that lies sleeping" is the one that we need to wake up to, rather than the one we think we are living. He notes that "forever is real" and the rest is just fake, suggesting that there is a deeper reality to be found beyond the surface of our everyday lives. Overall, the lyrics of "Up" speak to the idea that there is more to life than what we see on the surface, and that the key to understanding this lies in waking up to the truth that lies within us.
