Under Your Spell
Aruna Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Counting out the hours
Like the beat of a song
I feel like a stranger
Wondering where I belong
I wanna start all over
But I know that I can't
I'm helpless without you
I don't know who I am

I'm under your spell
Bound and blind and only you can save me
I'm tangled up inside
Caught in your web
I'm hypnotized and only you can wake me
Only you can bring this heart to life

Colors feel so faded
And I can't hear a sound
I'm walking in circles
Watching my world burn down
There's nothing else to fight for
'Cause you're all that I know
I'm stuck in your shadow
Letting you take control

I'm under your spell
Bound and blind and only you can save me
I'm tangled up inside
Caught in your web
I'm hypnotized and only you can wake me
Only you can bring this heart to life

So pull me in and don't let go
I wanna fall forever
I wanna overflow
If there's some way out, don't let me know
I don't wanna come to
It's too big to undo
I need to be near you
I can't keep away
Under your spell
I'm under your spell

I'm under your spell
Bound and blind and only you can save me
I'm tangled up inside
Caught in your web

I'm hypnotized and only you can wake me
Only you can bring this heart to life

Overall Meaning

In the opening lines of "Under Your Spell" by Aruna, the singer expresses a sense of being lost and disconnected, counting the hours like a beat of a song. There is a feeling of alienation and uncertainty about one's place in the world, longing to start afresh but feeling trapped in a cycle of helplessness and dependency on someone else. The repetition of feeling like a stranger and not knowing one's identity underscores a profound sense of disorientation and emotional turmoil.

The chorus reveals the extent of the singer's entanglement in a toxic and controlling relationship. They describe themselves as being under a spell, bound and blind to the manipulative power of the other person. The imagery of being tangled up in a web and hypnotized conveys a sense of being trapped and unable to break free from the hold that the person has over them. The plea for the other person to save them and bring their heart to life suggests a deep longing for rescue and emotional liberation.

As the song progresses, the singer paints a bleak picture of their surroundings, with colors feeling faded and the world around them burning down. This imagery reflects a sense of hopelessness and despair, with nothing else to fight for or hold on to except for the overpowering presence of the person they are under the spell of. The metaphor of being stuck in their shadow and letting them take control further emphasizes the singer's resignation to their circumstances.

In the final verses, the singer surrenders completely to the allure of the other person, desiring to be pulled in and not let go. They express a wish to fall forever and overflow with emotion, even if it means losing themselves completely in the process. The admission of not wanting to find a way out and being drawn to the overwhelming feelings they experience highlights the depth of their attachment and emotional dependence. The repeated declaration of being under the spell reinforces the theme of being ensnared in a powerful and consuming love that both suffocates and sustains the singer.

lol,,, American in the flesh,,, sorry for the confusion.
the handful of Americans into euro/trance etc. get it underground, Webster Hall NYC.

for me euro/trance has been since the first Rave rush filtered here,,, Storm Rave mid-late 90's. i was the company responsible for production supplying massive sound, lighting and video. The DJ artists then were Frankie Bonez, Lenny D, Adam X, Heather Heather, Doc Martin to name a few and who exposed euro to me.

Growing out of rave systems, i moved onto concert touring systems for the big leagues and in my every weekend spare time was at the clubs: Sound Factory, limelight, Tunnel, Palladium , Twilo, Sound factory bar etc, as club-kid and business (equipment rental vendor).. I was Very close to Junior Vasques, Victor Calderone, Frankie Knuckles, Peter Roughfer, Danny Teneglia, R Sanchez, basically all NY's finest and all deep underground.

My attraction to euro/trance is its production complexity, preferably with vocals for system equalization and BOOM.. i hear today tracks and chock-up experiencing layered 3-dimensional score/stems being explored and applied beautifully , mix-down value is beyond great and guys are geniuses.

Today modern tracks with digital advancement is off the rails and 3 dimensional sound in layers is the future for concert loudspeakers (steering sound),

I am also a loudspeaker physics engineer and manufacture my brand speakers , my latest model is specifically for modern euro , opening and exposing a completely new 3D listening experience that is felt on the ear-drum. (venue or studio). the technology is all passive and patented globally.

My hobby is/was and owner of pro-tools, fl-studio, reason, Yamaha O2R's etc., I know what it takes to produce tracks and had to stop from brain overload seeing the endless possibilities, unable to choose. The euro talent i hear is remarkable and too much goes UN-noticed,,,,, but I and those around do take notice !!!.

There really should be WAY MORE Trance Breaks songs. This is great trance...but make no mistake... this is also great breaks. More trance with Breaks drums would be one of the most awesome musical things to happen to the world...These sort of drums just go SO GREAT with these sort of melodies, vocals and sounds.
Y'all should also check out:
9pm(til I break)
Divine(Acco Traxx remix)
Many songs by Omuaha and Abdomen Burst...
Vladim Zhukov "evolution" and also "Love" by him as well.
Alex Morph did a sick Trance Breaks song "Eternal Flame,"
Armin Van Buuren "In and out of love"...breaks. Ferry Corsten "It's Time."
So many. Such an underrated, under appreciated neglected technique and style.

Unbelievable how amazing this track actually is. Some tracks don’t hold up over the years. That bass line, the words and sexy voice of Aruna actually puts you under a spell. Mesmerising!

To me this song was always a song of "the future". It just sounded so.. futuristic. I guess it is, since I'm still listening to it in 2020 😎
