Open Hearts
Ascension Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Born of fire
Thrown into dust
Bound to the will of thy terrestrial flesh and blood
The womb of nothingness
Has set you free
And no birthmarks you shall see
Serpent and seraphim erect in silence
Between the One and the three
You must fill the emptiness
Until the day that your mind will caress
The darkness that embraces your soul
And into dreadful dreams you will fall
For you shall bear the torch of love and faith
And you will wish to die
For blood you will drink

And hearts you will eat
And you shall raise the body of the Lord!

Overall Meaning

Ascension's song Open Hearts speaks of the human journey on this earth, from birth until death. The first two lines "Born of fire, Thrown into dust" speak of the creation of man from the dust of the earth and the fiery spark of life given to him. The next line, "Bound to the will of thy terrestrial flesh and blood," speaks of how man is bound to his physical form and the limitations it imposes on him.

The next lines speak of the journey of the soul, "The womb of nothingness, Has set you free, And no birthmarks you shall see," speaking of the freedom of the soul from the physical body's limitations upon death. The soul is then presented as a serpent and seraphim, erect in silence, between the One and the three. This line is referencing the Christian concept of the Holy Trinity and how the soul is caught between God and the world.

The final lines speak of the journey that the soul must undertake. The soul must fill the emptiness inside it until it finally embraces the darkness that awaits it. The torch of love and faith that the soul bears is a symbol of guiding the way towards the afterlife. The reference to drinking blood and eating hearts is metaphorical in nature, speaking of the spiritual sustenance that the soul requires to continue on its journey.
