Their sound has been said to draw influence from the shoegazing movement of the late 1980s to early 1990s, which was coined to describe the textured and effects-heavy sound of alternative rock in that era.
Asobi Seksu released their eponymous debut album in 2004. The band regrouped with a new rhythm section for their second album, Citrus, which was recorded in Gigantic Studios, New York City with producer Chris Zane.
One Little Indian Records re-released the band's first album Asobi Seksu and the follow-up Citrus in 2006.
The band changed its name to Asobi Seksu from the previous name Sportfuck when they signed to their current label.
The band announced an indefinite hiatus on September 30, 2013, but hinted that they hope to create more music eventually.

Red Sea
Asobi Seksu Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
These Hours Just Slept In Your Place
White Sand And A Vague
Sense Of Youth
How Can I Get Through
It's A Violent Truth
That I'm Like You
No Sun Or Depth
15 Dreams Of You All Alone
But Still Far From Reach
Crosses Traced In White Sand
It's A Violent Truth
That I'm Like You
You Said The First Time Was So Perfect
But The Rest Was All Just Wrong
You Said There Too Many Gone Too Long
The song "Red Sea" by Asobi Seksu seems to be a reflection on a past relationship, reminiscing on the "quiet days" and "sense of youth" that were shared. The singer seems to be struggling to move on, even after "14 quiet days" and "16 lonely hours" without their partner. The mention of "crosses traced in white sand" suggests that the relationship may have taken place on a beach or near the ocean, and adds to the nostalgic tone of the lyrics.
The line "It's a violent truth that I'm like you" is intriguing, as it suggests that the singer sees themselves as being similar to their ex-partner in some fundamental, perhaps even negative way. The final lines of the song refer to the idea that the relationship was good at first, but ultimately did not last. The lyrics are simple but evocative, conveying a sense of longing and melancholy.
