It Would Take A Strong Strong Man
Astley Rick Lyrics

My heart starts breaking
When I think of making
A plan to let you go
I keep thinking maybe tomorrow

I'm gonna let you know
But I when I think about leaving
I think about losing
The only love I ever knew
Every time I think of you

My heart starts aching
My hands keep shaking
And you know, you know, you know

* It would take a strong, strong man
To ever let you go (to ever let you go)
To ever let you go
My heart's been hurting

When I see you flirting
Every night out on the floor
I keep thinking maybe tomorrow
You'll grow to love me more

But whenever we're together
I could leave you never
Even though you treat me cruel
Every time I look at you

My heart starts aching
My hands keep shaking
And you know, you know, you know

It would take a strong, strong man
To ever let you go (to ever let you go)
To ever let you go
My heart's been hurting

I tried to resist you
When you're gone, all I ever do is miss you
Anyone in love would know
Anyone with half a heart

Could never let you go
But I when I think about leaving
I think about losing
The only girl I ever loved

Can't you tell me why do you hurt me
I guess some people never see
Especially a fool like me

My heart starts aching
My hands keep shaking
And you know, you know, you know

It would take a strong, strong man
To ever let you go (to ever let you go)
To ever let you go
My heart's been hurting

To ever let you go

I'll never let you go
(To ever let you go)

Overall Meaning

In Rick Astley's song “It Would Take a Strong Strong Man”, the lyrics depict a love that is simultaneously intense and heartbreaking. It sings about a man who finds himself trapped in love with a woman who treats him poorly, and he struggles with the decision of whether to leave her or not. The song presents a tormented, lovesick man who is unsure if he can muster the strength to let go of the woman he loves, even though it's better for him to move on.

The lyrics "My heart starts breaking, When I think of making a plan to let you go, I keep thinking maybe tomorrow, I'm gonna let you know" suggest that the singer is thinking about breaking up with someone but can't bring himself to do it. However, he is uncertain about whether he can stay or leave the relationship, as he considers what it would be like to lose the only love he ever knew. The lyrics portray the singer's internal struggle to choose between love and logic, as he is caught between the passionate feelings he has for the woman and the reality of the limitations in their relationship.

Overall, the song conveys the idea that love hurts and can be challenging to navigate. The lyrics reflect a common human experience in relationships; the desire to move on from a love that's not good for you, but being unable to let go. I truly believe in my heart that "It Would Take a Strong, Strong Man" was the classiest single record released in the 80s. That vocal performance coupled with that amazing guitar bit after the bridge and those backing vocals. An all-around flawless recording.

@RocStarr913

It’s a wonder it was Astley’s American distributor that saw its potential as a single.

@@RocStarr913 And strangely (at least to me), it was released as a single only in the US and Canada.

Also interesting to me that no other artists have recorded their own version since then.

@Ernie I totally agree! I've always loved that guitar solo and the wink to "Feels So Good" by Chuck Mangione (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDSBV0vTfTo guitar solo starts around 5:20). I can't ever listen to this song just once...it's always gotta be a triple lol

@Ron Rossmore It reached No.10 on the Hot 100 and No.1 on the Adult Contemporary so no flop. Sorry!

It was the year 1988-1989 ... I really love this song. It reminds me of my childhood, my mom, my dad, my brothers, my aunts, my house, my dog, family parties on Saturday nights, and Sunday meals. They were such happy days when my only concern was to paint my drawings without getting out of line. Thank you very much Mr. Astley for making my childhood such happy days.

I so love this comment. Me too. I remember my life when this song came out. Everything about it. Where I worked, going out, listening to the radio in my car at night. Such happy, sweet memories of a younger me.💙

I'm sure your nice family had a lot to do with that, and Rick was the cherry on top. Amazing how some songs can evoke such memories.👍❤
