Take Me To Aruanda
Astrud Gilberto Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Vai, vai, vai pra Aruanda
Vem, vem, vem de Luanda
Deixa tudo que é triste
Vai, vai, vai pra Aruanda

Vai, vai, vai pra Aruanda
Vem, vem, vem de Luanda
Deixa tudo que é triste
Vai, vai, vai, vai pra Aruanda

There's a land, Aruanda
Diamond sand, Aruanda
Silver stars on the hill top
Take me to Aruanda

Lots of fish in the stream there
Lots of time just to dream there
Golden sun in the valley
Take me to Aruanda

There where nobody worries
There where nobody hurries
Easy life waving a welcome
Take me there

Leave my sadness behind me
Let sweet paradise find me
Heaven waits over yonder
Take me to Aruanda

There where nobody worries
There where nobody hurries
Easy life waving a welcome
Take me there

Leave my sadness behind me
Let sweet paradise find me
Heaven waits over yonder

Take me to Aruanda
Take me to Aruanda...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Astrud Gilberto's "Take Me to Aruanda" are both simple and profound. The song is an invitation to leave all of one's troubles behind and go to a place called Aruanda, where life is easy and worry-free. The song begins by repeating a call and response chant, "Vai, vai, vai pra Aruanda / Vem, vem, vem de Luanda / Deixa tudo que é triste / Vai, vai, vai pra Aruanda," which translates to "Go, go, go to Aruanda / Come, come, come from Luanda / Leave behind all that is sad / Go, go, go to Aruanda." The repetition of this chant creates a hypnotic effect, as if the singer is trying to transport the listener to this otherworldly place.

The song then goes on to describe the beauty and serenity of Aruanda. There are "diamond sands" and "silver stars on the hilltop," along with "lots of fish" in the stream and "golden sun in the valley." Most importantly, though, Aruanda is a place where "nobody worries" and "nobody hurries." The singer longs to leave behind her sadness and find "sweet paradise" in Aruanda.

On a deeper philosophical level, the song can be seen as a metaphor for the human desire to escape the hardships and challenges of life and find a place of peace and happiness. Aruanda represents the utopia that we all dream of, but can never seem to find. Despite the simplicity of the lyrics, "Take Me to Aruanda" is a powerful expression of this universal human longing.

So much charm and warmth of tone to her voice. I saw her in concert in 1984 and she was an absolute delight, more than living up to expectation.

I saw her in concert in 1985. I came away with the very same impression as you did. One of the best concerts I ever went to - and I´ve gone to lots.....

I much prefer this live version over the studio recording. The slower laid back rhythm coupled with a band in a sublime groove and Astrud’s innocent and charming delivery make this a glorious performance . Pianist Benny Aronov’s embellishments are timeless and nice dance moves by bassist Don Payne at 1.42.

Astrud is an amazing Brazilian singer. i really love her voice and the way she sings: slow and smooth. she is my favorite bossa nova, jazz and Brazilian popular music singer. This is my "soundtrack" of the Brazilian summer, along with all of Tom Jobim's and Vinícius de Moraes' compositions.

@salute4392

Sweet paradise has found her. RIP to one of the greatest singers of all time.

@Gxyz222

This slowed down combo arrangement is very nice, and Astrud on stage looks very beautiful!

@death2pc

This is the tempo the song should have employed in the studio. Superior!

@jmashe9949

Easily transcends 'nostalgia'.
Our gift from the land of 'saudade'.
Just brilliant, lovely Astrud and company!
Cheers from Minnesota, Jon
