Lark
Au Revoir Simone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So
So long
So long ago
There wasn't anyone out there I thought I needed to know
But no more
When I find the day leave my mind in the evening just as the day before

I saw the window was open
The cool air
I don't know what you saw there
Don't know what you saw in me
Sometimes I want to be enough for you
Don't ask
Know that it's understood
There's not enough of me

I saw that something was broken
I've crossed the line
I'll point you to a better time
A safer place to be
Sometimes I want to be enough for you
Don't ask
Know that it's done no good

Sometimes I want to be enough for you

Don't ask
Know that it's done no good

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Lark" by Au Revoir Simone, describe someone who is reflecting on how much they have changed over time. It begins with "So long ago," which implies that the singer is looking back at a distant past. The singer talks about how they didn't think they needed to know anyone, which suggests a sense of independence and perhaps a bit of arrogance. However, the following line, "But no more," shows that the singer has changed and possibly has come to realize that they do need others in their life. The line "When I find the day leave my mind in the evening just as the day before," suggests that the singer is stuck in a mundane routine and is looking for something more.

The next stanza talks about a window being open and cool air coming in. It's unclear who the singer is referring to when they say "Don't know what you saw there/Don't know what you saw in me." This could either be someone who has left their life, or it could be an internal reflection about how the singer sees themself. The line "Sometimes I want to be enough for you" shows that the singer wants to be seen as valuable and important to someone, but they also realize that there is "not enough of me."

The final stanza discusses something being broken and the singer crossing a line. It's unclear what this is referring to, but it could be a relationship that has ended or a personal challenge that was faced. The line "I'll point you to a better time" implies that the singer has experienced growth from this experience and has learned from it. The repetition of "Sometimes I want to be enough for you" suggests that this is an ongoing desire for the singer, but they understand it may be futile.

Overall, the lyrics of "Lark" discuss themes of personal growth, the desire for connection, and the recognition that we are all flawed and imperfect.

My Name Isn't Important

Really glad Lynch is having these groups on his show. Au Revoir Simone, the Chromatics, and The Cactus Blossoms have been around for quite a while composing music. Hopefully now they'll get the attention they deserve.

I want to say that you are doing an excellent job. You are improving your sound design while keeping these raw synths that we enjoy a lot. Keep it up, that's amazing!

I love this song and i love how they incorporated it into the scene. Ive been a fan of Lynch for years ever since i saw Lost Highway when i was like 12. The Return is some of his best work. Yeah, the pace is extremely slow making it one of the series' only drawbacks, but the material, story, music, absolutely amazing. Truly is one of the best stories of modern times.
