The Lucky One
Au Revoir Simone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A dream of togetherness
Turned into a brighter mess
A faint sign my spoken best
Now, now

Make way for the simple hours
No finding the time its ours
A fate or it's a desire
I know

So I was the lycky one
Reading letters, not writing them
Taking pictures of anyone
I know

So let the sunshine
So let the sunshine
So let the sunshine let it come

To show us that tomorrow is eventual
We know it when the day is done

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Au Revoir Simone's song, "The Lucky One," can be interpreted as a reflection on a past relationship that didn't work out but still holds significant meaning to the singer. The dream of being together turned into a "brighter mess" - a situation that could have been positive, but instead, things became complicated. The singer feels they spoke their "best," but it still wasn't enough to keep the relationship going. Now, the simple things in life are the ones that matter most, and the singer acknowledges that this could either be fate or their desire.

The chorus, "So I was the lucky one," highlights the nostalgia the singer feels towards their past relationship. They read letters but did not write them, suggesting that they were the ones who received more love and attention than they gave. The line "Taking pictures of anyone I know" implies that the singer tried to hold onto memories by taking pictures of people they knew, but ultimately, these pictures can only go so far. Highlighting this idea is the repeated chorus of "So let the sunshine let it come, to show us that tomorrow is eventual." The singer is trying to let go of the past and embrace the present, knowing that better things will come in the future.

I randomly stumbled across this video again after several years. I'm barely the same person, but this is still so beautiful, it makes me smile just like it used to.

@centaurius

Indeed! I totally relate to this when I first heard this more than 10 years ago and today I found it again :)

When I'm having a bad day, I just listen to this song. I can just get lost in the beginning until the lyrics come on. It's never failed to make me feel better!

i started listening to this band when i was 11 and they were the most magical trio i had come across. i would hide in their soft voices and keyboard playing and imagine me making music like this one day. ive just had such a turbulent adolescence, and now im older without a clue as to what I wish to do but coming back here just reminds me of being in a simpler time and their lyrics are here to guide me back to happiness again
