Audiovent was originally formed by Jason Boyd, Paul Fried, and Benjamin Einziger under the name Vent. Boyd and Fried met while attending A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas. After Fried introduced Boyd to his stepbrother Einziger, the three decided to form a band. When Fried was in tenth grade Jamin Wilcox joined Vent. Throughout their high school years, Vent played gigs around Calabasas and eventually played as far as Hollywood. Ryland Steen replaced Wilcox on the drums in 2003.
In 2001, the band renamed themselves Audiovent, signed with the major label Atlantic Records. Audiovent then began recording their first major label album, Dirty Sexy Knights in Paris, which was released in 2002.
Paul and Ben are step-brother and brother of Michael Einziger and Jason Boyd is the brother of Brandon Boyd, both of Incubus.
When I Drown

When I say
Beautiful time
Is fading away
When will I wake
From this dream?
It's a never-ending painful scene
The water is thicker
I rise up when I drown
And swim to the surface
Thinking of you
Brings me down
How could you pull the plug
And replace me with someone else?
I rise up when I drown
The water is thicker
I rise up when I drown
And swim to the surface
Have you ever wondered about me?
Did you lose your feelings?
Or forget what my name is?
Have you ever wondered?
Well, have you?
I rise up when I drown
The water is thicker
I rise up when I drown
And swim to the surface
I rise up when I drown
Audiovent's song 12 When I Drown is a song about struggling to stay afloat in an emotional sense. The lyrics convey the feeling of being submerged in water and feeling like you cannot escape the pain that you are feeling. The song begins with an acknowledgement that a beautiful time in the singer's life is fading away and a desire to wake up from this painful dream that they are experiencing. The chorus, "I rise up when I drown, the water is thicker, and swim to the surface" displays their desire to keep pushing through the struggle and to keep fighting to stay alive. The second verse expresses feelings of heartbreak due to someone leaving them for someone else. The song concludes with the singer asking if the person has ever wondered about them, if they have forgotten their name or if their feelings for them have disappeared.
Overall, the lyrics give the impression of someone who is fighting an uphill battle to stay afloat and to keep going despite the pain they are feeling. Despite the feeling of drowning, the singer refuses to give up and is determined to rise up and swim to the surface.
