O Come O Come Emmanuel
August Burns Red Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heavenly home
Make safe the way that leads on high
And close the path to misery
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height
In ancient times did'st give the Law
In cloud, and majesty and awe

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

Overall Meaning

August Burns Red's song "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" is a modern take on the traditional Christian Advent hymn. It starts with a plea for the arrival of Emmanuel, who is Jesus Christ, to free the captive Israelites who are mourning in lonely exile. The lyrics speak of the hope that the Son of God will appear and bring joy to the people of Israel. The song is ultimately about the longing for redemption, which is a central theme during the Advent season, leading up to Christmas.

The second verse of the song asks for the "Rod of Jesse" to come and free the people from Satan's tyranny, and to save them from the depths of Hell. This verse speaks to the belief that Jesus is a direct descendant of King David, who was from the line of Jesse. The third verse calls for the "Day-Spring" or dawn to come to cheer the spirits of the people and disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death's dark shadows.

The fourth verse pleads for the "Key of David," or Jesus, to come and open the doors to heaven and make the path to eternal life safe, while closing the path to misery. Lastly, the fifth verse calls for the "Lord of Might" to come, the God of Israel, who gave the law to his people on Sinai's height, in majesty and awe. These verses depict the long-standing prophesies and beliefs of the Christian faith, and are woven seamlessly into the song's structure.
