Jingle Bells
August Burns Red (Holiday) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bob tails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
We got into a drifted bank
And then we got upsot
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh yeah
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
August Burns Red's version of "Jingle Bells" takes the classic Christmas tune and gives it a heavier, more metal sound. However, the lyrics have stayed true to the original version. The song tells the story of a group of people dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh, laughing and singing along the way. The sound of the bells on the bobtail, or the horse's tail, are heard as they make their way across the fields. The lyrics evoke the joy and excitement of winter and the holiday season.
In the second verse, the singer tells the story of a day when they decided to take a ride with a woman named Miss Fanny Bright. Unfortunately, the horse they were riding was thin and unlucky, and they soon found themselves stuck in a snowdrift. The word "upsot" is an old-fashioned term meaning upset, overturned or thrown over. Although the situation was not ideal, the group still celebrates the joy of the ride and continues singing and jingling their bells.

August Burns Red has improved the holiday season for me by an indescribably huge amount. I used to cringe when people put Christmas songs on, and I still do, but now I get to say "I'm picking the next song" and blow everyone's minds. Christmas albums are always a huge challenge for artists, especially a metal band, but they've pulled this off magnificently. Huge props.
