In Ancient Rome many people, especially well educated people, spoke Greek. Marcus Aurelius was certainly well educated, and was likely taught Greek from childhood. I’d guess he was pretty much bilingual, so it probably would have been no big deal for him to write a diary in Greek, especially the kind of material he was writing. However, WHAT he wrote is still astonishing nearly two thousand years later.

Being raised as an emperor he probably spoke many tongues and understood their dialects. Living in the time of the marvels of the arena was like a full movie production produced before his very eyes and he could also wonder beyond, behind the scenes seeing the lions snarl. I rarely loose the word amazing but his life had to be something near amazing indeed.

I don't think it's such an unusual thing. When I was learning English, I also kept a diary in English. At the same time, I tried to select more complex and expressive sentences. This is a good way to practice the written language.

Note: something like that isn’t necessarily inane, it’s a learned knowledge. The more you practice seeing the world that way the easier it is, to a point that you just think that way.
It’s the same reason why writers write eloquently in their journal and not just in books.

Probably due to the fact that one of his most influential teachers were greek. If you were taught philosophy in greek it's probably the most expressive language for that purpose. And if you are proficient in more than one language you can see notice the slight variation and find it easier to express yourself in certain areas in a certain language. Then we have the inherent differences in languages that make it easier to express certain nuances easier, in said language. Language isn't just a tool to express thoughts, it is thoughts.

They might not have known why break cracks in the past. Now we know the heat evaporates moisture quickly from the outside causing a rigid outer crust to be formed. This traps moisture inside. When yeast is active it converts sugars to alcohol and CO2. The alcohol evaporates out at a lower temperature (and would be less than 2% by volume). The CO2 build pressure inside of the loaf until the exterior cracks and releases more steam. It also allows the bread to continue to rise upwards.

Bread breaks on top because the heat of the oven dries the outside first. When the inside of the bread reaches temperature later in the cook the internal bread expands and cracks the top which is the weakest point of the crust and is under the most tension.

We know why bread cracks open. The outside cooks first and the the bread expanding underneath causes it to crack.

That's why bakers scoree the top of the bread, that way each load looks the same. And you wind up with things like hot-cross buns.

I know why the bread breaks on top. Because 2 things happen at the some time. The production of carbon dioxide by the yeast and the hardening of the crust. Essentially, the crust breaks as the bread inflates, and the exposed dough gets a crust. At one point the carbon dioxide production stops. Now, if the crust is not hard enough, the bread might collapse.

I know all this because I played around with a bread making machine once.

To be fair he probably would have been taught Greek at a very very young age almost as if it were his native language. Due to most things being conducted in Greek when moving about the empire, because that was the language of commerce for the time. So most Roman aristocrats would have been taught Greek at a very very young age.

As a bilingual person I can attest to the power of mastering a craft in your second language. It becomes the only way to express some ideas.

Spanish is my first language ; but I cannot speak technically in Spanish after publishing 20 manuscripts in English, doing science in English, coding in English, and learning philosophy in English.

A second language is an alternative way to see the world.

So I guess you could call Marcus Aurelius nonnative in Greek, but just like all members of the Roman elite he was educated in Greek from a very young age. People like him were fully bilingual, it’s comparable with how a lot of nonnative English users generally know English pretty well.

But let’s take this comparison a little further to really understand the linguistic ability of someone like Marcus Aurelius: imagine a French girl from an upper class family who received English lessons from private tutors from age 7 and spent a year abroad in London during high school. That’s what elite education like the one Aurelius received was like.
