Anthem
Austen Lyrics

This heart attack
You can't turn back
It's killing you now
I get so high
This heart of mine
Doesn't want to come down

Don't leave me stranded
In this ocean too deep to swim
We're fucked up and it's our anthem
And we sing

Don't leave me stranded
In this ocean too deep to swim
We're fucked up and it's our anthem
And we sing

Sing it loud, sing it loud
'Til you scream
Sing it back to me

Sing it loud, sing it loud
'Til you scream
Sing it back to me

(Sing it back to me)
(Back to me)

Searching for
Something to make me whole
Give me the piece that you stole
And all the space in me
It's a masterpiece
Hear you in every note

Don't leave me stranded
In this ocean too deep to swim
We're fucked up and it's our anthem
And we sing

Don't leave me stranded
In this ocean too deep to swim
We're fucked up and it's our anthem
And we sing

Sing it loud, sing it loud
'Til you scream
Sing it back to me
(Sing it back to me)

Sing it loud, sing it loud
'Til you scream
Sing it back to me
(Sing it back to me)

I know you're a player
So put the record in
Look like a heart-breaker
Needle in my skin, play to win
You'll be singing to yourself all day
Like you're insane
When it's late, take me out

You and me
We'll be on the rooftops dancing
Screaming the anthem
Yeah, you make me shout

Sing it loud, sing it loud
'Til you scream
Sing it back to me
(Sing it back to me)

Sing it loud, sing it loud
'Til you scream
Sing it back to me
(Sing it back to me)

Sing it loud, sing it loud
'Til you scream
Sing it back to me

Sing it loud, sing it loud

'Til you scream
Sing it back to me

Overall Meaning

In “Anthem” by Austen, the lyrics speak to the feeling of being so enamored with someone that it’s like a heart attack you can’t turn back from. The singer describes feeling high and not wanting to come down from their emotional high. The chorus repeats the plea of not wanting to be left stranded in the deep ocean of their feelings, which they describe as being fucked up and their anthem. They urge the listener to sing the anthem with them, loudly and until they scream.

In the second verse, the singer is searching for something to make them feel whole again after their heart has been broken. They describe the space inside them as being a masterpiece, with the person who broke their heart's presence echoing in every note. The bridge uses music as a metaphor for their relationship as the singer declares their lover a player and themself as the needle in their skin. Despite this dynamic, they want to dance together on rooftops, singing the anthem.
