Zahner-Isenberg began writing and recording songs at home on his computer during his 10th grade year in high school, and debuted a full electric band at the beginning of his junior year. The group played a number of local shows in Long Beach before being asked to play in Los Angeles. A year later Zahner-Isenberg began recording songs with Aaron Embry, and these recordings began to form parts of the band's first record.
In 2011 Zahner-Isenberg recorded two songs at home in Long Beach and released another single on Sub Pop titled "How Come/Good I'm Wishing", the band toured in the summer and then came home to write and record towards a second album.
Avi Buffalo's music was a mash-up of many genres, with heavy guitar influence and lyrical ambiguity.

What’s In It For?
Avi Buffalo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I couldn't help your mouth which I missed by two inches
Maybe I thought that you and I could run away alongside
But I didn't understand I was a cold tear in your rawhide
What's in it for someone with nothing to do?
What's in it for me?
What's in it for someone with nothing to do?
I can read but I won't if I'm sleeping here without you
And all these things that you learn, I've been knowing since my childhood
You are tiny and your lips are like little pieces of bacon
I can feel you on fire 'cause you're drunk and I seem too cool
What's in it for someone with nothing to do?
What's in it for me?
What's it in for someone with nothing to do?
What's it in for me?
Know I love it when you put your fingertips around my shoulders
Should I take you to more functions or would you rather be lonely?
I feel like I'm messing up too much and I forget where I am
You are so much wiser and I'm used to stretching things out so long
What's in it for someone with nothing to do?
What's in it for me?
What's in it for someone with nothing to do?
What's in it for me?
The lyrics to Avi Buffalo's "What's in it For" tell a story of a flawed relationship, where the singer walks in on a plan to dissolve all of their partner's wishes. The lyrics explore the idea of not understanding what their significant other wants and needs, despite attempting to run away together. The singer desires to understand what they should be gaining from this relationship, questioning "What's in it for someone with nothing to do? What's in it for me?"
Throughout the song, the singer holds immense admiration for their partner, acknowledging their wisdom and maturity while highlighting their own flaws. Despite this admiration, they express doubt in their ability to be what their partner needs, feeling a disconnect between them.
