Blue Jeans
Azealia Banks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue jeans, white shirt
Walked into the room, you know you made my eyes burn
It was like James Dean, for sure
You're so fresh to death and sick as ca-cancer
You were sorta punk rock, I grew up on hip hop
But you fit me better than my favorite sweater, and I know
Gangster, I know
Gangster, I know
Gangster, gangster, gangster

Gangster, gangster, gangster, gangster
Gangster, gangster, gangster (gangster)

Let's go
Tell me what bad boys do
I'm a bad girl, if you into that one too
My American dream in jeans all blue
Keep it cool like crushed ice cubes
It's you felonious in a foreign coupe
In the blue Range across my view
Met a crush, like my kind too
Ain't 'nough said about his moves
A real tough one, sometimes two
Let you fine about lifetime sunshine boo (say you'll remember)
Bandanas and bow ties, whips and handcuffs
Tied down, the thug life living like gangsters
Both wanna die, love living in danger
Bonnie to his Clyde hold it down like an anchor (say you'll remember)
Hardcore vibe, attracted more to his anger
Passion like fever, hot like Jamaica
Real rude boy, no problem, Malaya
Money on his mind 'bout getting his paper
Truth be told he's lied down with his flamer
Really like his flavor, wanna slow dance with the devil
With-with the look of an angel
Took a small chance with a rebel now my flesh is amazing
Now we shooting the lasers while laughin' at haters
Gangsters not bred I make them
Gangsters not dead I raise 'em (gangster)

Gangsters not dead
Gangsters not bred I make them
G-gangsters not dead I raise 'em

Say you'll remember
(Gang, g-gang, g-gang)
Say you'll remember
(Gang, g-gang, g-gang)

(Gangster)
(Gangster)

(Gangster)

Say you'll remember

Overall Meaning

The song "Blue Jeans" by Azealia Banks featuring Lana Del Rey is an ode to loving someone who is the complete opposite of oneself. The song opens with "Blue jeans, white shirt, walked into the room, you know you made my eyes burn. It was like James Dean, for sure." Here, the lyrics are portraying a bad boy who entered a room wearing a simple outfit but left a lasting impression because of his demeanor, which resembled that of James Dean, a cultural icon of the 1950s. Banks admits that she's drawn to this punk-rock bad boy, even though she grew up listening to hip hop, indicating her interest in someone who is completely different from her.

The line "Gangster, I know" that appears thrice in the song represents the feeling of attraction to someone who has a gangster-like, tough-guy image. The entire song is about falling in love with this kind of person, who is rebellious, rough around the edges, and represents a sense of danger. However, in the end, the song isn't glorifying gang culture, but instead, the relationship between the two opposing personalities.

I'm a die-hard Lana fan, but I actually feel complicated about the feud. Azealia probably has the best rapping skill I've ever heard, and she writes bops. If making music is a test, she is the student that always gets good grades. That's why I like her music. I love the fact that Lana was probably her only celebrity friend when she was beefing around with everyone, and I love that she came to defend Lana when Eminem seemed to diss Lana. Also, I love that Lana tweeted to support her BWET album. To me, it's kinda like a friendship between the best female singer and the best female rapper. Though I know Azealia seems to have bad attitude, it's still sad to see their camaraderie come to an end.

Regardless of who you think is right or wrong, they shouldn't be fighting and it's a shame knowing we'll never get more bops like this from them 😔

Lovely Bambi

Chills run down my spine every time Azealia’s verse starts
