Raining in Athens
Azure Ray Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I think of you, baby
And how I grew old with you then
And this summer, you'll call-maybe
And act as if we were old friends
You'd say, 'how are you, baby'
I'd say, 'it's raining in athens'
And to this day
That spoiled my poor heart
And I've mastered the art of dealing
Slipping away without falling apart
So when this summer, you call-maybe
And ask how
I've been
I can be honest and answer plainly
'Since November, it's been raining'
The lyrics of "Raining in Athens" by Azure Ray is a delicate expression of nostalgia, longing, and heartache. It speaks about someone who is still haunted by the memories of a summer love, and how it feels like to grow old with someone. The first verse states how the singer thinks of the person they loved and how time has passed since then. The second verse sets up the scenario of a potential call from the person they are missing, and how it would feel like if they acted like old friends. The lyrics, "You'd say 'how are you, baby', I'd say 'it's raining in Athens'" has a layer of hidden emotion as it conveys that the singer hasn't moved from the point of heartache. The last verse speaks about how the singer has mastered the art of dealing with heartbreak, even though it still hurts. The song ends on a melancholic note with the singer stating that the rain has been pouring since November, implying that they are still stuck in the same emotional state.

Still,
Even after all this time,
I think of you, baby
I still have thoughts of you
And how I grew old with you then
I remember the times we once shared and how old we have gotten since then
And this summer, you'll call-maybe
Perhaps you'll call me this upcoming summer
And act as if we were old friends
You'll pretend that we're the best of friends after all this time
You'd say, 'how are you, baby'
You would inquire about my well-being
I'd say, 'it's raining in athens'
I would tell you how it is in Athens
And to this day
Even up till now
I nurse the fever
I still hold onto the pain
That spoiled my poor heart
The heartache that affected me deeply
And I've mastered the art of dealing
But I have learned how to cope with it
Slipping away without falling apart
Without breaking down, I let go
So when this summer, you call-maybe
If you call me this summer
And ask how
And inquire about
I've been
My recent experiences
I can be honest and answer plainly
I'll be truthful and straightforward
'Since November, it's been raining'
I've been dealing with my heartache since November and it's still been difficult

Azure Ray is an American dream pop duo, consisting of musicians Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink. The pair met at the age of 15 at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. They fronted a band called Little Red Rocket, often compared to Veruca Salt, in their hometown of Birmingham, Alabama in the mid and late 1990s and released two albums with the band on Tim/Kerr records.[1]
Azure Ray started in Athens, Georgia, but relocated to Omaha, Nebraska and joined the music scene there. Taylor and Fink are also in another Saddle Creek band called Now It's Overhead, with Andy LeMaster.[2] The two have collaborated with Moby and co-wrote the song, "Great Escape" on the album 18. [3] They have also appeared on numerous Bright Eyes records. Fink also works with Japancakes.
Azure Ray went on hiatus in 2004, leaving Fink and Taylor to work on solo and other collaborative projects, including working in Now It's Overhead and Maria Taylor's solo recordings.[4]
Fink and Taylor reformed the band for a one-off show in Los Angeles on November 30, 2008. The duo was accompanied by Andy LeMaster of Now It's Overhead and Nick White of Tilly and the Wall.
In 2009, Taylor announced on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic that the band would reform on a semi-permanent basis in July 2009 for "5 or 6" shows before working on a new Azure Ray album. Their fourth album, Drawing Down the Moon, was released in September 2010.[5]
Azure Ray's six-song EP, As Above So Below, was released on September 5, 2012, on Saddle Creek Records.[6]
On February 11, 2015, Taylor Swift included Azure Ray's song "Sleep" from their self-titled LP on a 6-song "breakup playlist" made for a fan via her official Tumblr
