The Thrill Is Gone
B.B. King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away
The thrill is gone, baby
The thrill is gone away
You know you done me wrong, baby
You'll be sorry someday

Thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away from me
Thrill is gone, baby
The thrill is gone away from me
Although, I'll still live on baby
But so lonely I'll be

Thrill is gone
Thrill is gone away for good
All the thrill is gone baby
It's gone away for good
Someday I know I'll be open-armed baby
Just like I know, I know I should

I'm free now, baby
I'm free from your spell
Oh, free, free, free now, baby
Baby, I'm free from your spell

Now that it's all over
All that I can do is wish you well

Overall Meaning

B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone" is a blues classic that conveys the feeling of lost love and the pain that follows. The lyrics indicate that the adrenaline and excitement in a relationship have evaporated. The first verse sets the mood for the rest of the song with the repetition of the phrase "The thrill is gone" four times. B.B. King's guitar playing and vocals both follow each other intimately, amplifying the sorrowful tone of the track.

The following stanza indicates that the relationship is in trouble and that the singer has been wronged by his partner. It's giving a juxtaposing affect and setting up the tone of the song. Although the singer intends to live on, the thrill of the connection has vanished, leaving him desolate.

The verse that comes after that indicates that the feeling of excitement is not going to return. The use of the phrase "gone for good" implies that it is permanent. The singer repeats the phrase, indicating a particular resonance in his mind. The final few lines of the song contain a sense of completion. Although he is now free from his partner's grip, the singer accepts the reality that the relationship has come to an end, leaving him with nothing but well wishes for his partner.

I saw "The King" in 67 at Northern Illinois University. I stood right next to the stage, which was only about 4 ft above the gym floor. He rocked the house. When he was done he held his open palm with his guitar pick to me. I have it.

I saw him at air port. One of his roadies sat next to me trying to hold my hand when we hit Turbulence. I was all of 19 headed to Germany. That was early 70’s. Had it been king I would have let him. But he was up in first class. I love him even back then.

I protected his bus coming out of Chicago with my large car.
