I met BB at a music store in Vegas some 20 years ago. I was leaving, he was coming in at the exact same time. I didn't recognize him but being raised a gentleman, I stood back and opened the door for him...but him being the gentle soul he is... he stood back and opened the door for me!!!! We had a good laugh, shook hands, and went about our way, but I'll never forget that. What a genuinely nice person he was.

Jimmy Smith sat in and played on my Roland keyboard with the guitarist C.... C... Band (if you know blues you know who "CC is"), in a little club in Nowheresville, Ill. After we played at the Rockville Music Fest, (if you want to google the line up) 91 or 92 cant remember.
Hazy days. It wasn't very memorable, we did the gig free (cuz nobody showed up) for the club owner, friend of CC's. he didn't bother to advertise the gig. Like 5 meth head locals were there.. Stupid night. Smith was drunker than a mufuh, and the band didn't really give him what he wanted
(jazzy blues backing).

I believe this story because in 2014 or so BB King and his MGT, possibly road crew (basically his entourage of 7-8 people) sat directly behind us at the Beau Rivage casino buffet and we didn't even realize who it was until out waiter told us "hey u do know that's BB King at the table behind you?".
We never noticed because it was after 11p and the buffet was closed so we hadn't gotten up since they were seated (though seating new customers had ended prob half hour before they were seated, obviously they were allowed to go in late).

We could not see their table without turning around but I took a look after the waiter told us and yep, it was BB King alright! He had just played there which I sadly didn't even realize or we would have seen his show! I've never seen him live though I've wanted to since being a kid when he played jazz fest in this video and nearly every year he's played it too but I'm not into the festival setup deal and never did see him except for when he was eating right behind us!
We didn't want to bother him but I wished we'd said hi and told him how I appreciate his playing and influence on the music world. I can say he was down to earth, you could tell just from the basic table setup that he and his party had and they were super nice to our waiter who also served them. For example they were super cool asking for drink refills. You'd never have known it was a world famous musician and what I guess was his manager and top end road team. There he was at a regular table getting regular service just like anyone else (they did get to go in as the buffet was closing and remain late but otherwise they didn't demand any extra attention).
If anyone doesn't believe this then you can go to the Beau Rivage and ask Dustin who's been a waiter there for 10-15 years, in fact if you frequent the Beau Rivage you'll prob already know or st least recognize Dustin if you saw him! Ask Dustin, he'll tell ya how BB King ate at the buffet after a show in 2014 or so because I know he'll definitely remember it. :-)

i mean, really. Albert Collins. The Real master of the Telecaster.
10 or 15 notes in 12 bars from Collins is worth all those not SO well placed, blazing, meth driven 50 or 500 notes from..well... the lotta notes blasters, but not really masters. I dunno, i mean i think B.B. is the best player at B.B. King type blues if that makes sense. He's created an entire niche of his own, almost like he could sign his name to an entire sub genre of blues, at which he is the best, because even when he was 88 could barely stand and had to make an incredible vocal effort to talk, let alone sing, even then there was still only 1 B.B, and still only he did what he did the best. If any of that makes sense 😂

I always loved how humble Stevie was and how respectful he was to his mentors BB and Albert. I loved how Stevie was inspired by watching what BB and Albert were doing and was feeding off their soul and energy. Stevie was in a league of his own skill wise but also for his super humble character. He never thought he was the greatest guitarist… he was always willing to learn from the old blues masters and continuously be their student!

I really think being on stage with BB King and Albert Collins brought out something special in SRV that night. Don't get me wrong, Stevie was always phenomenal, but this performance was packed with so much feeling! It's one of my favorite solos I've ever heard him play live.

I've been blessed to have met BB King and shook his hand at an autograph signing after a show a few years before he died - AND saw SRV in 1988 only a few rows away! The memories are incredible, thanks for this video! Would have been great to see these two together in person. Legends.

I and my girlfriend at the time were fortunate to see BB and SRV together at the Greek Theater in LA. August of 1989. Forth and last time I saw SRV play live, and less than a year before his death. FIrst time was at the Palace Theater in New Haven, CT in November of 1985. Show opener was his brother's band The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Second time at Harford Civic Center in May of 1988 where SRV opened for Robert Plant. Third time was at Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT in August of 1988. Roomful of Blues opened for SRV & DT. GREAT MEMORIES!

Same story was 16 at B.B king concert in Wichita ks. Show was over and we were leaving musician I knew yelled us to follow him , B.B let 5people back stage to chat with him for about 20 minutes, still have his autograph on my high-school ID. Great guy !

Man that was good!!!! I love how B.B. King complimented Stevie's singing. I also loved how Stevie played in the song and wasn't trying to blow the other guys off the stage. He was complimenting them. Fantastic!! You could see the smile on B.B.'s and Stevie's face at the end. I think they were both pleasantly surprised and inspired!!!!!

BB King has just got the groove, his spacing and phrasing is just well, unparalled to anyone thats ever picked up a guitar. And then you have Stevie, who just attacks with raw and high octane energy, and plays some of the best blues lines and licks you will EVER hear. Its so hard to compare the two together, but FUSE them together on a stage, and you literally have the defintion of blues.

To top it all off, they put Albert Collins on stage as well, fuck me!!

That first bb king solo was masterful. He has that guitar singing a magical tune. Then boom comes Stevie with that high octane energy that you’re talking about. Unbelievable. I’m 24 years old and 95% of others in my generation have never and quite possibly will never listen to the blues. It makes me sad.

It also underlines how much variety there is in the blues. SRV does start his solo off with some BB licks but soon goes into his usual territory, which is quite different from BB's despite them both being modern electric blues. It's almost like they're speaking different languages, the whole choice of notes is different. You get a similar effect listening to the duet of BB and John Lee Hooker, now there we have a real "crossover" between two artists of the same genre.

I had the good fortune to see Mr. BB in Salem, Oregon about six months before he died. He was sharp and could still play a mean vibrato. I was grinning ear to ear when my wife asked what I was so happy about. I said "I'm watching a legend ply his skill. And there's so many ghosts up there on stage with him."

SRV, BB King, Albert King, Johnny Copeland, Johnny Winter, Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy, Son House, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, the list could go on forever. What a lineup that show would have.

I was blessed to see BB the King twice: Once in Tallahassee, where my brother's music store rented him a silver faced Super Reverb to play through; and then later, in Jacksonville, FL where my wife and I saw him in a large auditorium with Bobby Blue Bland. We were the only white people in the entire place and were made to feel as welcome as the next guy. We musta stuck out like a sore thumb to Mr. BB, as he played his heart out that night ...

I've seen all these guys separately, but in one show! WOW. I saw BB in a club in Ft. Smith, Arkansas in the 80s. There was an elderly woman in the audience celebrating her 92nd birthday. He called her up to the stage , took off a big ring off his finger, put it on hers, and said Happy Birthday. Coolest move ever.

As much as I love SRV and everyone else,my all time favorite guitarists is BB, he didn't have the speed , he didn't " shred" he played " within the box", but he was so soulful it was like drops of honey , and such a kinda humble person too

Texas flood is a 'the' song that defines the uniqe style of albert and srv and to see that bb mange to take it in 180° to "bb scale" makes you see the great musician he truly was, there is no whos better cuse srv got the best technique but its all about the feel, each major blues player got he own style and its a matter of personal taste to witch style you relate the most.

Wow. What a great jam. I'd never seen or heard this collab before today and I'm a huge BB and SRV fan. Their styles really compliment each other well and you can tell BB was a huge influence on Stevie. And you can tell what both their first loves are... because they are both phenomenal singers... but neither do much sangin' on this track... just pickin' and grinnin'. And Albert Collins is tearing it up as well.
