Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Hypnotize" showcase Notorious B.I.G.'s signature flow and clever wordplay. He raps "sicker than your average, poppa twist cabbage off instinct" and asks who can touch him. He goes on to describe his flashy lifestyle, name-dropping different cities and brands. Biggie's lyrics paint a picture of a life filled with luxury and excess, with women throwing themselves at him and money flowing easily. He confidently boasts about his skills as an MC, his wealth, and his power.

The hook of the song features Biggie's famous line, "Biggie Biggie Biggie, can't you see, sometimes your words just hypnotize me." The catchy chorus is sung by Pam Long of the R&B group Total. The song's production, done by Bad Boy Records founder Sean "Puffy" Combs and Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie, famously samples Herb Alpert's "Rise" and The Honey Drippers' "Impeach the President."

"Hypnotize" was released in 1997 as the first single off of Biggie's second and final album, "Life After Death." The song was a massive commercial success, reaching the top of the charts and remaining one of Biggie's most popular songs. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time.
