“When I was in middle school, I happened to buy a jazz record called Blues-ette at a used record store. An old LP. I can’t remember why I bought it at the time. I had never heard any jazz before. But anyway, the first tune on side A was ‘Five Spot After Dark,’ and it was great. A guy named Curtis Fuller played the trombone on it. The first time I heard it, I felt the scales fall from my eyes. That’s it, I thought. That’s the instrument for me. The trombone and me: it was a meeting arranged by destiny.” After hearing this, I get what Takahashi was on about
@lyleneander2100
Unreal. That's exactly what I did. I bought a second hand vinyl called Blues Ette by some guy I'd never heard of and I still play it and 50 years later still love it.

another reason to love murakami and five spot after dark.
i was crying a minute ago because of my period, but when i noticed the year, when this was recorded, i started to love this composition even more, cause my mom was born in that year. i miss her, i'm texting her good morning rn, and i'm pretty overwhelmed how much time passed since i was a kid. indescribable emotions.. just wanna see her and make her happy. just wanna live a life, where i can read murakami's books in a cafe, go to a convenient store in the middle of the night, humming jazz music.. just wanna live. if you're reading this rn, hey, i love you, have a good day and be happy 🫂

This was the opening theme to Jazz, The Abstract Truth on WRBC 91.5FM RadioBatesCollege with Don McCarthy. I used to listen in on Sundays back in highschool while I lived in Auburn ME. Good times. It introduced many a good tunes to me that are now in my faves and ipod thanks to Mr. McCarthy's willingness to reply to my request for the titles.
Forever grateful to him and to the fantastic musicians who put our souls into music form.

I came here as a trombone player: I really like Curtis Fuller's sound on this track. Now I have to read Murakami!
Incidentally, this is the only jazz song I know of that's in B minor--not a common trombone key to say the least.
@timlarsson
Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the novel, if you ever read it :)
@christopherfischer6998
Yeah Curtis is awesome. Glad to hear from a 'bone player. Awesome instrument. There are many jazz tunes in B minor you should check out that are hip, like some works from John Coltrane. "Miles' Mode," "Tunji," "Ole" just to name a few that are in b minor!

Great jazz music; Haruki Murakami gave the name" Five spots after dark " to his best known book, which made this jazz musician known to more people,
(like me, that I noticed just two years ago' reading the book )
Murakami was also inspired by the famous movie " Alphaville " by J.L. Godard , year '65 ; i advise to read the book and to watch the movie
