Yo!

Oh my

You know what I mean?
Hun!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of B.O.T.H.'s song "Hands on the Bible" appear to be a reflection on guilt, shame, and the feeling of being held accountable for one's actions, particularly when it comes to committing violence or harming others. The image of "hands on the Bible" suggests a desire for redemption or absolution through religion or spirituality, yet the lyrics ultimately convey a sense of hopelessness and resignation in the face of one's own wrongdoing.

The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, with the opening lines "Hands on the Bible, scared like a child / God holds you liable for what you've done." This establishes the idea of a higher power or authority figure as the judge of one's actions, and the following lines "Homicidal, stare down your idols / Pretty baby never born" suggest a violent or destructive past that haunts the singer. The second verse expands on this theme with the lines "Rats in the attic, toys in the cellar / She's an addict, he wants to learn," which evoke a feeling of chaos and disarray.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Hands on the Bible" several times, emphasizing the importance of seeking guidance or forgiveness in a religious context. Yet the lines "A pretty baby never to be born" and "You can't pretend that you don't know the reason / For the repent that you saw" suggest a sense of regret and sorrow that cannot be undone. The final lines of the song, "Hands on the Bible, hands on the Bible / You can't believe it, you didn't mean it / But they saw you do it and they know your name," drive home the message that actions have consequences, even if they were not intentional.

Overall, "Hands on the Bible" is a powerful reflection on the complexities of guilt, shame, and the search for redemption. The lyrics use vivid imagery and repetition to create a sense of urgency and discomfort, forcing the listener to confront their own flaws and mistakes. Whether or not the song is intended to have a specific religious or spiritual message is unclear, but the repeated invocation of the phrase "hands on the Bible" suggests a desire for guidance or forgiveness from a higher power.

I am walking out in the rain
And I am listening to the low moan
Of the dial tone again
And I am getting
Nowhere with you
And I can't let it go
And I can't get through

And the old woman behind the pink curtains and the closed door
On the first floor
She's listening through the air shaft
To see how long our swan song can last

And both hands
Now use both hands
Oh, no don't close your eyes
I am writing
Graffiti on your body
I am drawing the story of
How hard we tried
How hard we tried

And I am watching your chest rise and fall
Like the tides of my life
And the rest of it all
And your bones have been my bedframe
And your flesh has been my pillow
I have been waiting for sleep
To offer up the deed with both hands

Oh oh with both hands

In each other's shadows we grew less and less tall
And eventually our theories couldn't explain it all
And I'm recording our history now on the bedroom wall
And when we leave the landlord will come and paint over it all

And I am walking out in the rain
And I am listening to the low moan of the dial tone again
And I am getting nowhere with you
And I can't let it go
And I can't get through

And both hands
Please use both hands
Oh, no don't close your eyes
I am writing graffiti on your body I am drawing the story of
How hard we tried
Hard we tried
How hard we tried

I think she's one of the most exquisite, talented, original and brilliant guitar player and songwriter of her generation. She's a rare pearl. It's incredible, to me, how she's able to compose meticulous and refined guitar harmonies while sticking them with articulate lyrics and meaningful words...she really is an artist. <3

I was visiting my sister across the country when i was 16.. LOTS of 1st that year! 1st time traveling outta New England 1st time on a plane.. BOTH those things being done ALONE was a 1st in it's OWN to celebrate!! Sister was working as a live in employee in a "battered women shelter" I had obvi heard of them but never got up close and personal like that! I learned SSOOOO MUCH!!!! Sister was and still is a big fan of Ani, and the 1st song she played that got my attention was "Untouchable Face" I thought I was SSOO DAMN COOL belting out the lyrics to that song! F you and your untouchable face and f you for existing in the 1st place! Lyrics like THAT at 16 years old.. Yeeaaa I was HOOKED! It wasn't until I got older that I felt the weight of her topics and the way she delivered them.. I'm now 40 YEARS OLD and I STILL love Ani just as much as I did almost 25 years ago! In fact MORE SO now. I've learned that she's pretty damn timeless! As the years go on and I gain new experiences, I hear those same songs I've known FOREVER now, in an entirely new way!
Rock on Ani we'll always love you!
P.s. Another amazing artist I discovered that year and still love in the same manner is Doria Roberts! Just a friendly suggestion for Ani fans!

@deveryshepardson3640

My friend turned me on to Ani with her first record and I was hooked. My friend passed away today and I came here to both cope and say thank you! Pretty raw at the moment but “this too shall pass.”

@aeconiglio

Sending you so much love

@deveryshepardson3640

@@aeconiglio thank you I do appreciate it. Not as raw at the moment and the music permeated the space between us

@aeconiglio

I just saw Ani the other night live for the first time and cried. She was integral to my coming out and being brave...

@deveryshepardson3640

I remember the absolute joy and emotions that flooded me each and every song. Truly inspirational and so glad that you found her voice and it gave you the courage to be who you are!

@petevaldezbc1

I dated a hippie girl back in the day and she introduced me to Ani. Later when I was dating a different girl she wouldn't accept me liking Ani (because she knew the ex who introduced me to her) and resented when I'd try to get her to listen to her. Years later, after we had broken up but remained friends, she told me she eventually gave in and listened openly to Ani. She thanked me. Word of mouth is so great

@bloodhound9638

i dated a girl who likes Ani, now with current girlfriends we pish ourselves laughing at how shite she is
