Close to Me
BEDROOM - The Cure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

I've waited hours for this
I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
This close to me

Just try to see in the dark
Just try to make it work
To feel the fear before you're here
I make the shapes come much too close
I pull my eyes out
Hold my breath and wait until I shake

But if I had your faith
Then I could make it safe and clean
If only I was sure
That my head on the door was a dream

I've waited hours for this
I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
This close to me

But if I had your face
Then I could make it safe and clean

Oh, if only I was sure
That my head on the door was a dream

Overall Meaning

In the first verse, the singer expresses a feeling of anticipation and anxiety as they have been waiting for something significant to happen for a long time. This eagerness has caused them emotional distress to the point of physical discomfort. They regret waking up and facing the day, wishing they could have remained asleep. The sense of time dragging on and the uncertainty of when their situation will change weigh heavily on their mind. The idea of the upcoming night being this close to them adds to their apprehension, suggesting a looming event or confrontation that is both feared and inevitable.

The second verse delves deeper into the singer's inner turmoil and struggle to cope with their fears. They urge themselves to navigate through their challenges despite being in a state of darkness and confusion. The fear of the unknown before it materializes is palpable, emphasizing the mental strain they are under. The singer describes a psychological battle where they feel overwhelmed by threatening forces that seem too near for comfort. This imagery of impending danger and tension is heightened by the extreme measures the singer takes to cope, such as closing their eyes and holding their breath until they tremble with anxiety.

The chorus introduces a glimmer of hope as the singer reflects on the possibility of feeling safe and secure if they had the support and belief of another person. They long for the reassurance and clarity that could come from trusting in someone else. The reference to 'my head on the door' possibly alludes to a moment of vulnerability or a pivotal decision that could either be real or a figment of their imagination. The uncertainty of whether this situation is genuine or a dream adds to the singer's confusion and desire for stability.

In the final repetition of the chorus, the singer reiterates their feelings of sickness and exhaustion from waiting endlessly for a resolution. The repetition underscores the magnitude of their emotional turmoil and the lingering sense of anticipation. The longing for safety and certainty intensifies as they yearn for the comfort of someone's presence to guide them through their struggles. The juxtaposition of the dreamlike quality of their circumstances with the harsh reality they are facing adds a layer of complexity to the singer's emotional journey, highlighting their need for reassurance and a sense of control in the face of uncertainty.

Agree with You !

@thatusernameinuse

this remix is what got me into the Cure. I always thought of them as a downer goth-rock band and never gave them a chance. Then I heard this song. It's so funky and danceable. Now I really like a lot of their music.

@zimriel

@Mansuba's Counseling User 1989 was their downerest year though

This remix….reminds me of taking ecstasy at Hall’s in Austin in 85-86. Just the intro was all I needed for pure bliss!
