Megan is so lucky that she had all of these resources available to her. The fact that a world-class plastic surgeon was in Taiwan and was able to be there for her, the fact that his friend even cared enough for Megan to call him on her behalf, the fact that she’s a Singaporean national with access to the SGH skin bank and SG universal health care, everything. I’m sure a lot of the victims in that fire weren’t so lucky. I’m so happy to see her healthy and well.

She is really lucky that the Singapore surgeon just so happened was at taiwan that week for the plastic surgeon conference. He was just heading to the airport to return to Singapore when he got the call to see Megan at the taiwan hospital.

When my mother died, we donated skin. Because she'd had so many medications to treat her pneumonia and multiple organ failures, it was all we were able to donate. She was such a giving person in her lifetime that we were happy we could do a little bit.

What an incredible gift your mother gave. Thank you to you and your family for giving your blessing. This fantastic documentary really highlights how critical skin donation is. It doesn’t receive the same media or awareness of solid organ donation, or even blood donation, but skin donation is especially unique. Solid organs have something of an “expiry date”. Depending on the organ, they can last up to ~20 years (some people have organs that have lasted even longer, but this is rare). This requires re-transplanting.

Skin donations will , in most cases, last a persons natural lifetime. It is not only a life saving gift, but also one granting functionality, and aesthetic.

Thank you for your mother’s gift, and may her memory bring you joy.

It’s awesome that you have had that conversation with your family as, unfortunately, in most countries the family makes the decision, regardless of if the person is a donor. A lot of people are registered donors but their families sadly decide against their wishes. Very very few people ever die in a way that their organs or tissue can be donated, but if that does happen, it’s the most selfless gift to give, and an incredible lasting legacy. Well done for discussing this with your loved ones and making your wishes clear with them!

I am a burn survivor. 70% full thickness burns and of course smoke inhalation. After being transported 80 miles to the nearest burn unit my husband was told I had less than a 5% chance to survive the next 24 hrs. Every day that passed that number increased. This was in 1999, and although I received outstanding care and obviously survived- watching stories like these leave me feeling blessed all over again. The advancement in treatment from 1999 to Megans in 2015 is amazing! And yes, dressing changes and debridement is nothing less than pure agony, there are no words for that level of pain. I had nightmares about dressing changes for several years.

There’s so many preconceptions about plastic surgeons, but they actually do so much good! They help treat burn survivors (my own mother had to get plastic surgery on her leg after she got burned by spilling boiling water on herself as a kid). They also treat things like cleft palettes I believe. They’re more than just a shallow cosmetics profession. My respect goes out to them.

A plastic surgeon closed me up after spine surgery where the incision was made on the front of my throat. Instead of a thick, noticeable scar, it’s a barely noticeable, thin line that is smooth and flush with the skin around it. I was concerned about scarring.

@@rainbowunicornnun Plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery are two different things. Plastic surgery is for things like palate clefts, scarring, and other disfigurements. Cosmetic surgery is things like lip injections, face lifts, and nose jobs. it’s only cosmetic if you were fine beforehand and just get it done because you want to look different. Plastic surgery is more akin to reconstructive surgery, and often they are the same thing.

I am a burns victim. An Industrial accident in 2000 which left me blind in my right eye and 70 inches of skin grafts and donated skin areas .in total I had 26 operations in 14 years. The compensation money does not give you back what you have lost and the money spent doing to hospital for appointment. Some days 5 or 6 appointments in one day .or two different hospitals in the same day.

Flash burns from aerosolized powders cause deep burns & lung damage as well. It's not something most people are aware of. Even not terribly combustable powders develop static charges moving through the air. Even something like talc can flash in the right environment.

Wow this was just recommended to me and well im a burnt survivor too with only 40% chance of survival.. it happened when i was only 6 years old at the time and let me tell i have trauma of going into operation room, going in and out of the hospital was hard, my scars on whole body remained till now make me conscious of my own body, i had to learn how to walk again like a baby and so much more. I have never been so grateful towards whoever that helped me in the past although all of it was kinda blurry as to how young i was when everything happened. So here i heard the survivor in the vid with only 10% chances of survival idk my heart just tick ? Sorry w the bad eng not my first language haha

Your scars tell the story of your survival. Wear them with pride. They may make you self conscious, but I guarantee you that the story of how they got there makes people look at you in an incredible way. My step son is a burn survivor. He is covered with burn scars on 40% of his body. Seeing the incredibly painful dressing changes and the months he spent in the hospital has left a imprint of just how strong a burn victims will to live really is. You are strong, and don’t let anyone take that away from you ever.

@@belindalaw2957 sorry, but these folks are far, far beyond hot soup burns... it’s like comparing a stake through the heart to a splinter. I’m not doubting yours was very painful, but these poor people have been traumatized mentally and are set to special specific burns units because of how horrific their injuries are. Not trying to be nasty, there’s just a certain amount of respect that people earn the hardest way, by surviving the impossible, being tortured for months or years.

Megan must be a very strong young lady to survive such a tragic injury. The medical team did an amazing job but it requires a fighting spirit and strong will to make it. Oh I agree , excruciating pain for such a long period of time. I think I would have given up too. Megan is an extraordinarily strong woman and I commend her on that. So glad she survived. Such an insightful story . Brilliant job done by all the medicos and professionals involved. And thankful the other gentleman mentioned in this story survived too.

Actually no, if she suffered 3rd degree burns, she would not have been in much pain because because the pain receptors have been obliterated along with the rest of the dermis

Shock and adrenaline dulls the pain, at the hospital they are given all kinds of drugs to stop the pain. I once slammed my head into a rock, i had blood all over my face, but i couldn't feel the pain since i was so shocked.

@@tamaranotowitz6197 very true I was rideing my horse behined my sister's horse her horse went to kick my horse and kicked my Shin instead with that much force it tore through my pants I still have the scar of the horses hooves on my Shin but I was in complete shock all the way to the hospital a part of my bone got snapped away I had 11 stitches and had to walk around with cruches for two week's it dosent hurt now I don't have any feeling in that part of The leg and never Weill I don't blame the horse I should have known better not to ride Close behined another horse we learn from our mistakes and even the best of rider's sometimes get it wrong

I remember right b4 graduating nursing school we went to many hospitals to tour for possible job opportunities.
One of them was the Shriners hospital for pediatric burn victims.
I have such an enormous amount of respect for anyone who dedicates their life to this field of care.
I know I certainly couldn't do it.
This is a special calling for sure.

My husband had full thickness burns to 80% of his body after being doused with jet fuel after a helicopter crash. Each and every single experience that these burn survivors went through, my hubby went through. Although I still hope to this day that he felt no pain as he was put into an induced coma. His life would have been one of surgery, pain and physio therapy, and he would have been wheelchair ridden. Sometimes I think the higher beings know what is best for us all. RIP my Andre.

@Debra Olivier: When I was in nursing school, we were sent to Metro Health hospital to observe and learn about burn victims. There was a 19 year old boy who was somehow burned on 95% of his body. He worked for a company that put hot asphalt on building roofs and parking lots, etc. He was so bad, he had long pins, more like stokes on a wagon wheel; this was so that his finger's would not fuse together. The look in his eyes was so....like, it was more than fear, it was terror and confusion. His eyes were screaming "why? Why? ". And the screams that came from the tub room was blood curdling. My first boyfriend put up neon signs on businesses and such. He died when his truck somehow lost control, coming back from a job in Pa. He was ejected from the cab of the truck, slid into the pool of gasoline, and they said that probably his big belt buckle sparked the fire. This was before nursing school. After the burn unit, I felt that it was better that he expired. He was a fireball. It was more merciful than if he had lived. It didn't help, but he used to say: " live fast, die young, and leave a beautiful corpse. " I am sorry that I told you all of this, because the last thing I want to do is to cause you more pain. Every time I think of this, I place in our dear Lord's hands. I was so traumatized by this, but I did become an RN, and every patient I have, gets the best care that I am capable of. And when a patient tells me that they are in pain, I stop what I am doing, and go to get that patient their pain pill or injection....no one in pain ever waits more than 3 to 5 minutes when I am their nurse. If you don't mind, I have placed you and your loved ones on my prayer list. It isn't much, but I wish you all things bright and beautiful and peaceful. Many blessings to you. 💖

He had been a fit athletic man and the surgeon told me that he would never have had the use of his hands (they would continue to bend into talons from the severe trauma), he would have been wheel chair confined and he would have faced years of surgery. I know it was best for him to die. Burns are truly the most awful injuries out. There is an amazing woman in Australia that was caught in a bush fire whilst competing in an outdoor trail race. Her story is just incredible, and so is her husband's love for her.
Thank you again, you are a wonderful caring person and nurse. Too many nurses these days only see it as a job, not a calling. Xxx

This entire video makes me so much more grateful that when my house went up in flames due to Arson, that nobody was hurt. I cannot stress that enough. There was a moment when I didn’t know where my dad was, and seeing him unharmed was the most relieving feeling in the world. Out of 4 cats and 3 dogs, unfortunately one of our kittens was lost. I guess you could say I'm a burn survivor too. It happened when I was really young (around 16 months) so I don't remember it. 80% of my skin was burned and I had to get helicoptered out to a burn hospital in Sacramento with a 5% survival chance. I had 2nd and 3rd degree burns and smoke inhalation. I spent the next couple months in the hospital and then after that a year in physical therapy since my hands were burnt closed. I still have scars.

I recently had been admitted to a hospital for a while. For so long I was terrified of hospitals, and watching videos like this would frighten me. This is the first one I have watched since discharge, and I have found that my view on hospitals seems to have changed so much. There's so many nice people there that want to do nothing but help..they are all truly wonderful.

I remember seeing this tragedy on the news that summer, it was on the news for days, casualties going up and up. I never truly grasped the gravity of it, but when the fireman described the smell of barbecue, the smell of burning human flesh, i kinda broke. So many young lives. Truly a freak accident. Megan was so strong through it all.

it's heartbreaking to see people having fun and enjoying their time to then suddenly being attacked by the fire and hundreds being severely injured, losing loved ones or being left with horrible scars that'll remind you of the event. it was unfortunate that some had to go to another country just to have the things they needed to be accessible to them. i hope that most of them were able to have a speedy recovery and my prayers and love goes out to those who lost their lives during the event.

I just want to say how gratefull I am to these doctors! When I was 2 I got 2nd degree burns all over my left arm and leg ( doctored initally diagnosed me with 3rd degree burns) and thanks to the burns doctors I am now 27 with only one faint scar that passes as a birthmark !

They speak English better than probably at least %75 of Americans I know.
And Ms. Megan Roy, despite her not really being my type, per se, I must say is very, very attractive due to her personality, her perseverance, and absolutely her intelligence. I caught on fire in 1966 I was 5 years old and 75% at 3degree and the rest of me was second and first back then my chance of surviving was less than 5 present.
My father was a Navy pilot so his commander had me transfer to the military burn hospital in Texas, it was the only burn hospital in the U.S.A as the that time back then you had no way to wrap the burns and they used pig skin for graphs and corpses for graphing skin on to me until I had some skin to use. A lot of men died around me, it was a sad time. ( Vietnam War)
The one thing I always prayed for was, please God help these Doctors make it so people don't have bad scares like mine and make there healing faster and less infections.
Today I see that my dream came true.
Her scars look good!

My mother had 3rd degree burns on her face and her two arms, it was an accident. We thought she was healing because the burns on her face were healing but I don't know, I was still young, she died because of infection according to the doctor. I witnessed the doctors trying to save her and forever haunted on that lines turning flat. My mom was 42 years old.

My hear just broke watching what these burn patients endured as the fantastic doctors and nurses did their very best to save their lives. Megan touched me the most, and I know I will think of her and pray for her for to have a full and happy life. Mr. Lokos had so much determination that he really inspired me as well. I can’t even begin to imagine the horrible pain she endured. A small burn from the oven or a curling iron hurts so much. God bless her and her strength and the doctors who jumped into action. She is a beautiful woman. On another vein, wonder what that hospital bill looked like, my granddaughter was born at 32 weeks and she cost $250,000. Thank God for insurance.

Singapore has a fantastic universal Healthcare system, one the best in the world, so I doubt they had to pay much at all, this young woman was so lucky.
