سَلامٌ عَلَى الدُّنْيَا إذا لَمْ يَكُنْ بِهَا
صَدِيقٌ صَدُوقٌ صَادِقُ الوَعْدِ مُنْصِفَا
Baaba Maal's song "Dunya Salam" features a lyric about the nature of love, relationships, and human connection. The essence of the song is that if someone doesn't care about you, there's no point in forcing their affection. There are different people in the world who would be happy to be with you and make you content. Though love can be painful, it is important to be patient and not to hold a grudge against those who hurt you.
The lyricist goes on to say that not everyone who loves you, loves you for the right reasons. Some people may fall for you because they see some benefit in it for themselves, not out of genuine love. And not everyone who appears kind or loyal to you will always be that way. Life is full of ups and downs, but the most important thing is to keep moving forward and learn from our experiences.
Line by Line Meaning
إِذا المَرءُ لا يَرعاكَ إِلّا تَكَلُّفاً
If a person only shows care for you out of obligation and not genuine concern,
فَدَعهُ وَلا تُكثِر عَلَيهِ التَّأَسُّفا
it's better to let them go and not dwell on their lack of feelings towards you.
فَفِي النَّاسِ أبْدَالٌ وَفي التَّرْكِ رَاحة ٌ
In people, there are those who will replace those who leave and in abandonment, there is peace,
وفي القلبِ صبرٌ للحبيب ولو جفا
and in your heart, there is patience for your loved one even if they betray you.
فَمَا كُلُّ مَنْ تَهْوَاهُ يَهْوَاكَ قلبهُ
Not everyone you love will love you in return,
وَلا كلُّ مَنْ صَافَيْتَه لَكَ قَدْ صَفَا
and not everyone who you believe to be loyal to you is actually pure in their intentions.
إذا لم يكن صفو الوداد طبيعة ً
If genuine love and affection does not come naturally,
فلا خيرَ في وردٍ يجيءُ تكلُّفا
then there is no value in receiving forced displays of affection.
ولا خيرَ في خلٍّ يخونُ خليلهُ
There is also no good in a friend who betrays you.
ويلقاهُ من بعدِ المودَّة ِ بالجفا
and leaves you after showing friendship with cruelty.
وَيُنْكِرُ عَيْشاً قَدْ تَقَادَمَ عَهْدُهُ
They may also deny a friendship that has a long history together.
وَيُظْهِرُ سِرًّا كان بِالأَمْسِ قَدْ خَفَا
They may reveal a secret that was hidden in the past.
سَلامٌ عَلَى الدُّنْيَا إذا لَمْ يَكُنْ بِهَا
Peace upon this world if in it, there is
صَدِيقٌ صَدُوقٌ صَادِقُ الوَعْدِ مُنْصِفَا
a true friend who is honest and keeps their promises, and just.
