Baader Meinhof
Baader Meinhof Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We made the cops look dumb
On the border line
Springer said 'must be the mood of the times'
Rudi says "we've got to get wise"
And we've got to get armed'
Its a surveillance state operation
Rich kid with a gun
Al-fatah in Palestine against the P.L.O.
Andreas says 'She's not the girl that I used to Know
Rudi says

Child of Eva, your Christianity
I had a dream it was the end of the Seventies'

Overall Meaning

The song Baader Meinhof 2 by Baader Meinhof is a socio-political commentary on the state of affairs of the world during the time. The lyrics talk about the group's perception of their influence on society, and how they've put the cops in a bad light. The reference to Springer's statement, "must be the mood of the times," indicates that society is moving against the cops, and it could be due to the vile role the police force plays in society. The song speaks about Rudi Dutschke's statement, "We've got to get wise and we've got to get armed," which is suggestive of the need for more radicalization to jolt society out of its apathy. It's a call to action, for the people to reject systemic oppression, to demand change, and to do whatever it takes to achieve it.

The lyrics also contain several references to global events. The mention of Al-Fatah in Palestine against the P.L.O. indicates the rampant internal conflicts and power struggles within the freedom movement, which are weakening its strength. The line "She's not the girl that I used to know" refers to Andreas Baader's changing ideology and his growing disillusionment with the Baader Meinhof group's beliefs. The reference to "Child of Eva" and "Christianity" indicates the moral values and ethics that underpin the group's actions. The lyrics culminate in the line, "I had a dream it was the end of the Seventies," which can be seen as a portent of things to come – an indication of society's transformational future and the end of the status quo.

Thanks for the hard core version - much neglected.

@LaughingStock_

Buy the LP, sir - Luke can't survive on "likes" alone.

Martin Hugh Henley Just bought two copies of the remastered CD— one for my older brother who started me off on music in the late 70s. HaVE the original issue CD too since its release. I can’t stop listening to it lately! Soooo good.

@InfotainmentScan

Every other version has them "Fighting in Palestine with the PLO"; but, here, it's "Fighting in Palestine against the PLO" -- it makes no sense that way, but there it is...

@Spartoksilverhand

*al fatah in Palestine against the PLO

@InfotainmentScan

@Spartoksilverhand Interesting... but Fatah & the PLO were on the same side, weren't they?

@Spartoksilverhand

@@InfotainmentScan I was wrong the outro version mentions fatah, here I think it’s “a fight to end Palestine against the PLO” which makes more sense.
