Undercover
Baba Shrimps Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't need a lover,
Can't stand the candle light,
If we can't have each other,
I prefer the neon nights.
I live undercover,
I drifted out of sight,
I don't leave the house,
But everybody tells me
You should go out
Try not to think about it
You should clear your mind
Everbody tells me
You should go out
And stop to think about it
You sure gonna find
You gonna find somebody else

You gonna find somebody else

I need a lover
Don't need no sympathy
I don't need another
I don't leave the house

I don't need a lover
Can't stand the candle light
If we can't have each other
I prefer the neon nights
How can I recover
How can I refall (?)
Way more than a lover
Should made upon my heart

And they say
You should go out
And stop to think about it
You sure gonna find
You gonna find somebody else

You gonna find somebody else
You gonna find somebody else
You gonna find somebody else

I stay under water
I won't find another
I stay undercover
To see that time already tells (?)
To find somebody else

You gonna find somebody else
You gonna find somebody else

You gonna find somebody else.
You gonna find somebody else.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Baba Shrimp's song "Undercover" convey the emotions of someone who is hurt, confused, and yet determined to move on. The first verse showcases the singer's aversion to traditional romantic gestures, as they state that they don't need a lover and can't stand the corniness of candlelight. The second part of the verse reveals that the singer prefers the anonymity of the neon lights, perhaps an allusion to late-night parties and clubbing, where they can hide their pain and insecurity.

In the chorus, the singer explains that they live undercover and have "drifted out of sight." Both lines suggest that the singer has become reclusive and wants to avoid contact with the outside world. However, the contradictory nature of the following two lines, where "everybody tells me" to go out and clear my mind, hints that the singer's friends or family are trying to help them move on and find someone new.

The second verse of the song sees the singer reiterating their desire for love while rejecting any form of pity. They use the same lines from the first verse to establish that they prefer to be alone and can't stand traditional romantic gestures. The final part of the verse suggests that they know they need something more substantial than just a romantic partner to recover fully. The chorus repeats twice at the end of the song, with the final line highlighting the theme that the singer is trying to move on and find someone else.
