Exiled
Bad Breeding Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dragged out from shadow into blazing light
I leant on compassion but soon paid the price
Reason snatched, slick instruments won
as the world went drifting vacant eyed

Exiled, but choked for all to see

The freshest of wounds were the ones they mined first
A pining for relief stamped into scorched earth
The cries of a mother muffled, unheard
Pressed behind glass, drowned in plain sight

Exiled, but choked for all to see

And I used to dread the thought of trauma, now it circles every day
Waiting in the wings, prowling like a stalking horse

See nature knows of hardship at least it has its use
This is suffering as a construct - man's longest-running gag

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bad Breeding's song Exiled speak of a person who was brought out of the shadows and into the spotlight. Initially, this person relied on compassion as a source of comfort. However, soon they realized that reason had been snatched away from them and were under the influence of slick instruments that had won over them. As a result, they were exiled, and their pain was on display for all to see.

The fresh wounds of this person were used against them, and their desire for relief was stamped into the scorched earth. The cries of a mother were drowned out and were only visible behind the glass, trapped and unheard. The lyrics convey a sense of isolation, loss, and human suffering. The person who was once seeking comfort and compassion had been ensnared and condemned to a life of pain and exclusion, visible only as an object of pity.

The lyrics of Exiled are a commentary on the suffering that humans experience at the hands of their own kind. The idea that trauma is always lurking around the corner, waiting to pounce and overwhelm us, is a central theme in the song. The lyrics also allude to the idea that suffering is a construct, the longest-running gag of humankind. These deep, thoughtful lyrics compel us to reflect on the darker aspects of human nature and the world we live in.
