Long Shot
Baillie & the Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm gonna write you a letter
Call you on the phone
Gonna send you flowers, sing you a song
I'm gonna get to you . . . just you wait and see
And even if you won't say yes right now
I'll bide my time 'cause some day, some how
I'm gonna get to you . . . the way you get to me
You can call me crazy I don't care
The odds are bad but the chance is there

[CHORUS]
A long shot at love Is better than no shot
Right now, that's all I've got to get to you
So I gotta believe
A long shot at love Is better than no shot
My heart won't let me stop 'till I get to you
The way you get to me

Gonna throw a little salt
Gonna knock on wood
Gonna say a little prayer that my luck runs good

I'm gonna get to you . . . I hope I get to stay
And even if you break my heart in two
I'm going for broke that's all I can do

I'm gonna get to you . . . before you get away

You can call crazy I don't mind
The odds are bad but I've got time

[REPEAT CHORUS TWICE]

A long shot at love Is better than no shot

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Baillie & the Boys' song Long Shot explore the theme of pursuing love despite the odds being stacked against the main character. The first verse includes actions that the singer is taking in order to reach their love interest; they'll write a letter, call, send flowers, and sing a song. The chorus emphasizes the idea that even though it seems like a long shot to get the person they want, it's still better than not trying at all. The singer is shown to be optimistic and hopeful about their chances, indicating that they are not giving up on love and will take any chance they get.

The second verse is about things the main character is doing to improve their luck, such as throwing salt and knocking on wood. They also mention saying a prayer for good luck. The lyrics suggest that the singer is willing to go to any lengths to make sure they have the best shot at getting together with their crush. The bridge depicts the singer's determination to keep trying, even if they get their heart broken along the way.

Overall, Long Shot is a song about not giving up on love, even when the odds seem low. It's about taking chances and going for what you want, knowing that it may not work out, but still trying anyway. The lyrics encourage listeners to take risks and not let fear hold them back.

I love Kathie Baillie's voice. Reminds me of Crystal Gayle. Excellent song by one of the greatest 80's country bands.

Loved this group. Wish they were still on the radio !! Lots of memories.

This is a great duet. The girl has a beautiful voice!!! No such music today. Country is crap today and not really country. I listen to the old songs--no comparison to today's.

I absolutely love '80's country. Back when it truly was country in every sense of the world. Country music today pales in comparison. Not in even close. I remember this band. Great stuff.

sarahstacy81 I agree I like country music between 85 and 05. Tom petty said it best, 'today's country music is bad rock with a fiddle.' Its sad to see what's happened.

Amen, halleluyah, and you are so right. My sentiments eggzakly.

This is one of my favorite country music songs from late ‘88 - early ‘89. I first heard it on a Phoenix country music radio station after moving from Chicago. I fell in love with the song instantly! I used to dance around the living room with my baby on my hip to this song. Still loving this song in 2023 and the sweet memories it evokes. ❤
