Nathan Jones
Bananarama Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You packed your bags as I recall
And you walked slowly down the hall
You said you had to get away to ease your mind
And all you needed was a little of time

Oh winter's passed spring and fall
You never rung me, you never called
Nathan Jones you've been gone too long
Gone too long

If a woman could die of tears
Nathan Jones, well, I wouldn't be here
The key that you're holding won't fit my door
And there's no room in my heart for you no more

Oh winter's passed spring and fall
You never rung me, you never called
Nathan Jones you've been gone too long
Gone too long

Nathan Jones

Oh winter's passed spring and fall
You never rung me, you never called
Nathan Jones you've been gone too long
Gone too long

Oh winter's passed spring and fall
You never rung me, you never called

Nathan Jones you've been gone too long
Gone too long

Overall Meaning

"Bananarama's song Nathan Jones" is a song about a man named Nathan Jones who leaves his lover with what seems to be no explanation or reason. The song paints the picture of a woman who is left to deal with the aftermath of a break-up and the deep emotional pain that comes along with it. The lyrics indicate that it has been a long time since she has heard from Nathan Jones, and despite the pain, she has had to move on. The song expresses her resentment for his decision and her firm stance that she no longer has any room for him in her heart.

The lyrics unfold in a story-like fashion, with the woman reminiscing about the past and noting that all she needed was a little bit of time to ease her mind, but Nathan Jones has been gone for too long. She describes how things have changed over the seasons but Nathan Jones never reached out, leaving her in the dark with nothing but the key to her door, which she knows won't fit anymore. She acknowledges that her love was deep enough to have killed her if tears could have done the trick, but she has moved on past the point of holding onto any hope for him. The song ends with the chorus repeating that Nathan Jones has been gone for too long, indicating that the woman has truly moved on from him.

I remember hearing this song on the radio back in late 1988 in Orlando, Florida. Thanks for the memories. I wanna go back to the 1980s. Who's with me?

This song appears in Rain Man oddly enough, when Raymond is rocking back and forth in Charlies loungeroom to music it's this playing on the stereo as Charlie watches him. Why they picked this song isn't totally clear but maybe cos its a parallel of how Raymond just vanished without saying bye cos he's autistic and how Charlie should take him home.

I'm with you on that
