Lions Christians
Bang Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shaking hiding from there sight
We dread to feel their angered might
We cannot run from this fate
Unjust rewards, they make us wait

We all denied their pagan ways
We must suffer their deadly sport
It might take hours and it might take days
Our time on earth is growing short

No more pain and wondering why
We're with our God he heard our cry
We had the vision and now we are free
Our screams will live in history

We're herded to the bloodstained ground
They tell us death by starving hounds
Our skin our bones they'll desecrate
Our souls our faith they'll never take

Our lot was drawn, we choose Our Lord
We knew we'd die by beast or sword

Our fear of God was strong, stronger than
Our fear of death our fear of man

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Lions Christians" by Bang are rich in meaning and symbolism. The song draws on the story of the early Christian martyrs who were persecuted and put to death for their beliefs by pagan authorities. The opening lines of the song describe the fear and desperation of those who are being hunted down by the authorities. They are hiding and shaking, trying to avoid being caught by those who would do them harm. The use of the word "sight" is interesting because it suggests that those who are being persecuted are aware of the presence of their persecutors even if they cannot see them.

The second stanza describes the unjust punishment that is inflicted on the Christians. They have denied the pagan ways of their oppressors and must now suffer for it. The use of the word "sport" to describe the punishment is particularly striking because it suggests that the act of causing pain and suffering has become a form of entertainment or amusement for the persecutors. The line "Our time on earth is growing short" highlights the inevitability of death and the fact that the Christians know that they will die for their faith.

The final stanza of the song is the most hopeful. It describes the moment of transition from life to death for the martyrs. They are no longer in pain and they are with God. This line can be interpreted in a number of ways, but it suggests that the martyrs have found peace and that their suffering has not been in vain. The line "Our screams will live in history" is a powerful one because it suggests that the memory of the suffering of the Christians will continue to be a reminder of the injustice that was done to them.

If you like these guys check out Lucifer's Friend, Dust, Trapeze, Pentagram (70's era with Vince McAllister on guitar ie First Daze Here 1 & 2 and Human Hurricane- deadly pentatonic chair-throwing & recklessly relentless mad sonic genius and real barnburning guitar solos et al...!!!- (in other words let the music do the talking and don't be thrown off by the image conveyed by the band name alone., as far too often happens when people are recommending stuff to check out music wise...,, ok, next on the list of 60-70s hard rocking geezers, any pre-Eliminator (MTV Sell-Out Crap) ZZ Top (Pantera's Diamond Darrell primary influence as a youngster- even Hendrix predicted B. Gibbons as the next big thing in rock guitar way back in the 60s..., then, Wishbone Ash, say the Argus and Pilgrimage LP's (the fathers of the twin-guitar lead trade-off format, who set the pace for Priest, Maiden, Lizzy and so on;  Budgie's Never Turn Your Back On A Friend is another doozy... then Blue Cheer's Vincebus Ereptus, and Live Over Nuremberg;  ACDC's genuine debut album (in Australia anyhow) High Voltage (with Soul Stripper, a masterpiece in my humble opinion)...Powerage of course is another great B. Scott album too.  There's so many, but let's not omit any 70's era Alice Cooper either... Please share any knowledge of great 60/70s hard rock blues based bands ahead of their time... !!!).  Oh, and though are of contemporary times (as of nowadays) check out Burning Saviours, Witchcraft, and especially Black Trip from Sweden as they sound awesome, like they just stepped out of a time machine!.
