Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
Till I Loved You
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Till I loved you
Every sky ever gray, never blue
You were my friend, good friend
And sometimes I would wonder
Could the one to save me possibly be you?
I was lost, I was blind
Wouldn't see, couldn't find someone new
You were my friend, dear friend
I held you close to my heart
But I never thought that I'd feel the way I do
Until that certain moment when I loved you
And now I can't ever imagine my living without you
It seems I spend all of my time
Thinking only about you
Once I dreamed I in a dream I would find you
Never thought that the dream would come true
Until that curtain lifted, parted
Drifted from you
Until that certain moment when I loved you
Until that certain moment
Certain moment (til that certain moment)
When I loved you
When I loved you
Nothing lived, nothing grew
Till I loved you
Every sky ever gray, never blue
You came along, stole my heart completely
And I thought, could the one to save me possibly be you?
In this song, Barbra Streisand and Don Johnson sing about finding true love and how it has transformed their lives. The lyrics explain how their lives were empty and lacked purpose until they found each other. The song speaks of how the love between the two has made previously perceived dull life suddenly seem vibrant and full of color. The lines "Nothing lived, nothing grew Till I loved you Every sky ever gray, never blue" show how bleak and hopeless life seemed before they met each other. Barbra and Johnson express how their friendship slowly turned into something deeper until that "certain moment" when they realized they loved each other. The choruses of the song emphasize how all their days, nights, and thoughts now revolve around each other, and they can't imagine life without the love they share.
The lyrics connect with the way we feel when we find love, the loneliness and desolation we felt before, and how those feelings disappear as soon as we find our partner. The lyrics are heartwarming and emotional, delivering a moving message of love, companionship, and the power it holds to change our lives. The song is a perfect encapsulation of how love can be transformative and one of the most powerful forces of nature.
