I'll Be That Girl
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I were you (and I wish that I were you)
All the things I'd do to make myself turn blue
I suppose I'd start by removing all my clothes
Tie my pantyhose around my neck

I'll be that girl and you would be right over
If I were a field, you would be in clover
If I were the sun, you would be in shadow
And if I had a gun, there'd be no tomorrow

If you will not have me as myself
Perhaps as someone else
Perhaps as you I'll be worth noticing
Then even a eunuch won't resist
The magic of a kiss from such as me

I'll be that girl and you would be right over
If I were a field, you would be in clover
If I were the sun, you would be in shadow
And if I had a gun, there'd be no tomorrow

It's time to kick off your shoes
Learn how to choose sadness
It's time to throw off those chains
Addle our brains with madness
'Cause we've got plenty of time
To grow old and die
But when at last your beauty's faded
You'll be glad that I have waited for you

When you're done
With being beautiful and young
When that course is run, then come to me

I'll be that girl and you would be right over
If I were a field, you would be in clover
If I were the sun, you would be in shadow
And if I had a gun, there'd be no tomorrow

There'd be no tomorrow
There'd be no tomorrow

There'd be no tomorrow
There'd be no tomorrow

Overall Meaning

The song "I'll Be That Girl" by Barenaked Ladies is a quirky, up-beat tune that sounds innocent and fun at first listen, but the lyrics reveal a much darker message. The first two verses reveal a longing for a different life, a desire to be someone else entirely. The singer wishes for actions that would cause harm or even death, indicating a sense of self-destructiveness or depression. This is exemplified in the line "If I were you (and I wish that I were you)/All the things I'd do to make myself turn blue." The third verse suggests that the singer is willing to change themselves entirely, even if it means being someone they are not. The mention of a eunuch suggests a desperate desire for attention or validation, even from someone that can't give it to them.

Despite the song’s seeming negative connotations, the chorus is full of fantasy and whimsy. The singer imagines themselves as a field, the sun or a girl that everyone wants to be with. The chorus creates a complete contrast between the darkness of the verses and the lighthearted nature of the chorus. The final verse, "when you're done/with being beautiful and young/when that course is run, then come to me," suggests that the singer is waiting for someone to notice them, and hints at the knowledge that their youth and beauty will eventually fade away.

Overall, "I'll Be That Girl" is a complex and slightly unsettling song about longing, self-destruction, and desperation, mixed with light-hearted fantasy and a hint of hope.

A lot of older BNL fans thought this album was their sellout album, mainly due to One Week.  But almost 20 years later, it still holds up as one of their best, IMO.  Every single song on Stunt is fabulously evocative of the work of the best songwriters - it makes you feel as if you are actually there experiencing it.  And now that I'm no longer that (cough)highschoolstudent(cough), I can really appreciate the depths of emotions involved in creating these masterpieces.  I truly hope that Steve comes back to the band because they really reach those heights with his super-underrated writing skills.

The first tape I ever bought. Listened to it over and over!

DarkEyes86

Best BNL album by far. It's amazing.

Omnibot

Older fan, this is the best by far, born on a pirate ship might have the feelz but it can't carry all the way through like this one can.

Matthew Stetson

I'm glad you mentioned one week relative to the sell out because this song is an incredibly twisted work of art.

TranscendR

Absolutely agreed. As someone who loves nearly every BNL song (regardless of tone), I actually really appreciated the range on this album back in the day. But you're totally right when you say that Steven Page's writing skills aren't appreciated nearly enough. So many of the BNL songs he wrote have those same kind of somber, haunting undertones buried beneath an upbeat track, and I adore that kind of juxtaposition.

I remember listening to this and playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Good memories. This band is so underrated, they're very talented songwriters. Maroon was a masterpiece, love that album too.

This is one of those songs that makes me feel okay about my experiential lens. The entire album is real and dark yet so upbeat and its songs give me hope/ let me know someone gets it for me...ya dig?
