One and Only
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Am I the only one who gets to make you laugh
Laugh until you cry?
Am I the only one who asks you to go
Go on without me?
Am I the only one who loves when you leave
Your hair down in front of your eyes?

And who
Who do you think I am?
And who
Who do you think I'll be
Without you?

Am I the only one who had to dress you up
To see how you fell down?
Am I the only one who needs you to go
Go on about me?
Am I the only one who loves when you leave
Your hair down in front of your eyes?

And who
Who do you think I am?
And who

Who do you think I'll be
Without you?

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Am I the Only One" by Barenaked Ladies express the singer's concern about his significance to someone he loves. He wonders if he's the only one who can make her laugh until she cries, the only one who asks her to leave him behind, the only one who likes it when she brushes her hair down in front of her eyes. He asks her who she thinks he is and who she thinks he will become if she's not there with him. The singer's questions about his place in the relationship suggest that he's not confident in his value to the person he adores.

The second verse dwells on the singer's past experiences with the woman. He remembers having to dress her up to see how she looks when she falls down, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for seeing her vulnerability. Once again, he needs reassurance that he's still somebody to her, that she doesn’t just go about herself. He admires the way she leaves her hair falling in front of her eyes, possibly because it provides her with some sort of emotional protection or distance. He proceeds to ask her who she really thinks he is and the person he'll become without her, once again revealing his uncertainty about their relationship's worth.
