Half A Heart
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Drunk on wine, Iâ??m amazing
Bitter Pill, itâ??s my raising
News at five and at midnight
Caught on tape, serves me right

The crowd around me starts to grow
I can feel the undertow
Anyone with a half a heart would help me out
Before they ever let the other half find out
But if they could see how far Iâ??ve let you down
Anyone with half a heart would let me drown

Flashing lights couldnâ??t warn her
Paint myself in a corner
Bracing now for the impact
Losing hope, keeping track

Standing on a crumbling wall
Tethered to a cannonball

Anyone with half a heart would help me out
Before they ever let the other half find out
But if they could see how high Iâ??ve built this wall
Anyone with half a heart would let me fall

In the space between sleep and sleeplessness
We redress all our wounds
If we replace all this hopeless hopelessness
Then we could rest

Anyone with half a heart would let me drown
Anyone with half a heart would pull me down
Anyone with half a heart would let me fall
Anyone with half a heart wouldnâ??t care at all

Anyone with half a heart would help me out
Before they ever let the other half find out

But if they could see how far Iâ??ve let you down
Anyone with half a heart would let me drown

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Barenaked Ladies' Half A Heart describe a situation of a person in deep trouble and in dire need of help. The singer is seen holding a glass of wine, feeling amazing but it is a temporary balm to the bitter pill of their upbringing. The news media catches on tape the singer's state of vulnerability, and the throng of people surrounding him/her starts to grow. The singer feels the undertow of emotions and is at risk of drowning.

The lyrics then describe a sequence of events that lead to the singer feeling like they are standing on a crumbling wall, tethered to a cannonball. They feel that they have let someone down and built a wall high around themselves. In between sleep and sleeplessness, they want to restore their hopelessness, but they are not optimistic. Consequently, they feel that anyone with half-heart would either let them drown, pull them down or let them fall.

The song highlights the need for compassion and empathy towards people who are struggling with their lives. The singer feels abandoned, isolated, and helpless. Thus, it shows the importance of providing support and compassion to individuals suffering from depression, addiction, and other mental illnesses.

If you knew what he was talking about... you would get the sweet poetry. I can't make you hear his emotions in his voice.

Helena Haivarlis

This song isn't about Steven. It's more about Ed being accused of not being faithful.

Janice C

While this album has some good songs, it's my least favourite. I think when you listen to it now you can tell the end for him was near it just doesn't sound the same.

Danny62

I'm the opposite Janice, it was by far my favourite. Indeed my all-time favourite BNL track before "Sunshine". And I've got all their albums. I love his voice, the lyric, and the exquisitely jangly intro & outro.

Kathleen

No one can ever replace him.

Bouchard AandA

You know Iam going to replace Steve someday <3 that's my dream ever since I was 6 ;)

BNL w/o SP aren't BNL. SP without the others is...nothing.
