Crickets Throw Their Voice
Basement Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If it all worked out we would live in a different house.
We would live in a different town.
This is a brand new start; clear body, broken heart.
I'll come visit you when i get the chance.
Breathing's not easy when you're underwater.
I am drowning and you're keeping me under.
Close your eyes, sleep outside. it's warmer than in here.
I'll be fine, i'll run and hide. i wish i could stay here.
You're still in my head. my mind's convinced that you never left.
I'm counting down till i see you next.

I still compare everything to your silhouette.
How can i forget what is perfect?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Basement's song "Crickets Throw Their Voice" are quite introspective and reflective of the emotions associated with a heartbreak. The lyrics essentially depict a person who is struggling to cope with the aftermath of a break-up, reminiscing about happier times and wondering how it all went wrong.

The song begins with the realization that things could have been different if the relationship had worked out. The singer laments about not being able to share a life together in a different place. The irony here is that things did not work out, but it is still quite difficult to imagine a life without the other person.

The lyrics delve deeper into the emotions associated with the heartbreak - a clear body, broken heart. This line expresses the loneliness and pain that the singer is experiencing after the break-up. The person desires to see the other person again but can only do so when the chance arises.

The chorus of the song describes the impossible feeling of breathing underwater - a metaphor for how the person is feeling after the end of the relationship. The despair and sadness of the situation are further emphasized by the statement that the other person is keeping the singer under.

The second half of the song talks about how the person wants to hide instead of moving on. They still think about their ex-partner and compare everything to their silhouette. The lyrics point out the difficulty of forgetting someone who was perfect in every way.

Overall, "Crickets Throw Their Voice" is a poignant look at the personal and emotional fallout from a break-up, which many can relate to.

I'm happy to find a band I really love that has a lot of fans, I feel less alone and there's a bigger chance of the band making more music. Where ever you are right now, and if you still like them in 2024, I am happy that at least you liked them in 2021.
