As an artist, while you're creating something, you know if it resonates and can't help but keep it in. It's a very organic proces, which feels like the art is making itself real physically through you as a sort of conduit or catalyst, rather than being created and conjured entirely by you.
I think you're right, in that it goes beyond physicality. The true source, as far as I can tell, is the primordial force and intelligence behind creation and creativity, that which created Reality, individualized Consciousness, and Nature itself. But of course, as said, that individual soul is also needed to realize it as real and show the creation to other souls; it's all part of the process.
