No Matter What
Beauty and the Beast: The Broadway Musical Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

BELLE

Papa, do you think I'm...odd?

MAURICE

My daughter odd?
Where did you get an idea like that?

BELLE

I don't know.
It's just that, well, people talk.

MAURICE

They talk about me, too.

MAURICE

No, we're not odd, its true
No fam'ly ever saner
Except one uncle who...well, maybe let that pass
In all you say or do
You couldn't make it plainer
You are your mother's daughter; therefore you are class

BELLE

So I should just accept
I'm simply not like them

MAURICE

They are the common herd
And you should take my word
You are unique: creme de la creme
No matter what you do
I'm on your side
And if my point of view Is somewhat misty-eyed
There's nothing clearer in my life
Than what I wish and feel for you
And that's a lot...
No matter what

BELLE

No matter what they say
You make me proud I love the funny way
You stand out from the crowd

MAURICE

It's my intention my invention
Shows the world out there one day
Just what we've got...

BELLE

No matter what

MAURICE

Now some may say all fathers just exaggerate

BELLE

That ev'ry daughter's great?

MAURICE

You are!

BELLE

And ev'ry daughter tends to say her father's tops

MAURICE

She pulls out all the stops
To praise him

BELLE

And quite rightly!

MAURICE

No matter what the pain
We've come this far I pray that you remain
Exactly as you are
This really is a case of father knowing best

BELLE

And daughter too!

MAURICE

You're never strange

BELLE

Don't ever change

BOTH

You've all I've got
No matter what.

Overall Meaning

The song "No Matter What" from Beauty and the Beast explores the close bond between Belle and her father Maurice. In this conversation, Belle expresses her feelings of being odd and different from the people around her, as she has heard others talk about her in that way. Maurice reassures her that they are not odd, but rather unique and special. He tells Belle that she is her mother's daughter, which means she has class and stands out from the common crowd. Maurice emphasizes that he accepts and loves Belle just the way she is and will always be on her side, no matter what.

Throughout the song, Belle starts to accept herself and feel proud of her uniqueness. She appreciates her father's support and love, as he encourages her to embrace her individuality and not to change for anyone. They both acknowledge that others may doubt or criticize them, but they will stay strong and maintain their bond.

The lyrics reflect the profound relationship between Belle and Maurice, highlighting the importance of acceptance, self-love, and staying true to oneself, even in the face of societal judgment. It is a heartwarming reminder that no matter what others say or think, the love and support of family can give strength and confidence.

1:42 - 1:49 is gold. Something about the way everything falls into place. Beautiful.

The man who played Maurice in my community theatre's production of this musical kept saying he couldn't sing...but he killed it. Everyone was cheering him on from backstage during this scene.

KingdomHeartsFan3211

I was in a production of “Beauty and the Beast” last summer as Maurice, and during this scene, Belle and I did a little dance towards the end of the song, which just made it feel all the more special. I felt like my heart melted a little every time we did that dance, whether it was in rehearsal or during a performance.
I know this may sound a little biased, but I think if any song in this show is underrated, it’s this one. The music and lyrics are heart-meltingly pure and beautiful and perfectly shows just how much Maurice and Belle love each other.

Jennifer Schillig

I remember being shocked that Tom Bosley was in this, and had such a good singing voice...then I remembered he'd been in the original cast of Fiorello.

This song was what made me fall in love with the stage musical score. Such a sweet expression of father-daughter love!

Her high note at the end though. God, I love Susan Egan!
