First of May
Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall
We used to love while others used to play
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by
Someone else moved in from far away

Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small
And you don't ask the time of day
But you and I, our love will never die
But guess we'll cry come first of May

The apple tree that grew for you and me
I watched the apples falling one by one
And I recall the moment of them all
The day I kissed your cheek and you were mine

Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small
And you don't ask the time of day
But you and I, our love will never die
But guess we'll cry come first of May

When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall
Do-do-do-do-do, do-do do-do

Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by
Someone else moved in from far away

Overall Meaning

The Bee Gees' song "First of May" is a nostalgic and bittersweet reflection on the passage of time and the enduring power of love. The opening lines set the scene in a wistful and sentimental way, describing a time when the singer was young and in love, surrounded by the joy and innocence of the Christmas season. The contrast between the singer's youthful optimism and the passing of time is emphasized with the line "Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by", hinting at the inevitability of change and the realization that nothing can remain the same forever.

As the song progresses, the juxtaposition of past and present becomes even more pronounced, as the singer reflects on the journey they have taken together with their loved one. The image of the apple tree that grew for the two of them serves as a metaphor for their enduring bond, which has weathered the ups and downs of life. Despite the changes that have occurred, the singer is certain that their love will never die, even as they face the possibility of shedding tears on the "first of May".

Overall, "First of May" is a poignant and moving meditation on the transitory nature of life and the immortality of love. The song's themes of nostalgia and reminiscence, coupled with its wistful melody and heartfelt lyrics, have ensured its enduring popularity.

@Michael Triba, I was born in 1956 in Brazil. Like you, I've listenned to The Bee Gees's songs ten of thousands of times.
Among all of them, the one I've liked the most was surely "First of May". I used to sing this song everywhere, everytime, even I'd no idea what was the meanning of it.
I was a teenager and no knowlegde of English language (and I don't have it well until now) but I often tried to sing it.
Yesterday, 1st of may 2021, I offered this song to a friend for her Birthday. She is 30 years old and have never heard about The Bee Gees.
So, I was trying to know a bit more about the song, when I read your post. 😥😥💔
So haven't I. (you said: "I never quite realized until now what a sad and tragic love song that First of May is).
Thanks anyway.
For now on, I will look after more information about.
At 60th, 70th , 80th this was impossible and very few we knew here in Brazil.
And as adult, the attention was through work, home.....
God bless you.
