How to mend a broken heart
Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can think of younger days
When living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do
I could never see tomorrow
But no one said a word about the sorrow

How can you mend a broken heart?
Or how can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?

How can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again, da da da da da

I can still feel the breeze
That rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by

I could never see tomorrow
But no one said a word about the sorrow

How can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?

And how can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again,

Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again

Overall Meaning

The Bee Gees’ hit “How to Mend a Broken Heart” explores the deep pain of heartbreak and the desperate plea for help in coping with it. The opening line, “I can think of younger days” sets a nostalgic tone, reminding us of the time when joy and freedom were all that mattered. The following lines “When living for my life was everything a man could want to do” emphasize the urgency of living life to the fullest with seemingly no regard for what lies ahead.

However, the lines “I could never see tomorrow, but no one said a word about the sorrow”, hint at the singer’s ignorance of the heartbreak that was to come. The second verse continues this nostalgia as the singer remembers “misty memories of days gone by”. The chorus of “How can you mend a broken heart?” is a desperate plea for help, asking how one can stop the pain of heartbreak, and how one can stop the world from going round.

The bridge of “Please help me mend my broken heart, and let me live again” is a gut-wrenching admission of defeat and a longing for a return to normalcy. Despite the song’s sadness, it is an authentic depiction of the raw emotion that comes with heartbreak, and it resonated with many audiences.
