I Was A Lover A Leader Of Man
Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was a lover, a leader of me
All of the women I knew were my friends
I was so happy, my feet on the ground
I didn't know I was on the way down
Cause you don't feel the same
It's only a game, it's only a game, it's only a game

I had a billion or two in the bank
I gave to charity, ain't got no thanks
You gave me all that a woman could give
Less you're affection, I don't want to live
Cause you don't feel the same
It's only a game, it's only a game, it's only a game

Cause you don't feel the same
I was a lover, a leader of me
All of the women I knew were my friends
I was so happy, my feet on the ground
I didn't know, I was on the way down

Cause you don't feel the same
It's only a game, it's only a game , it's only a game

Overall Meaning

The Bee Gees’ song I Was a Lover a Leader of Men is about a man who thought he had everything, but he didn't realize that the woman he loved didn't feel the same way about him. The song describes a man who had a lot of friends, a lot of money and a lot of love to give. However, he was unaware that he was on his way down emotionally, as the love of his life didn't feel the same way about him.

The first verse of the song talks about how the man had a lot of female friends, but he was not romantically involved with any of them. He was content with his love life and felt happy and grounded. But as the song progresses, he realizes that the woman he really wants doesn't want him back. He has plenty of money and is very charitable, but he finds that receiving affection from a woman is just as important. He doesn't have that love and affection from the woman he desires and stops feeling happy.

In the chorus, the man realizes that his feelings are not reciprocated, and he describes it as "only a game." To him, love is not just a game, but he feels like he was played by the woman he loved. The song's melody has a melancholic tune that evokes the feeling of loss and realization of the harsh reality; that the woman he loved doesn't feel the same way, leaving him on a downward spiral.

I've been a fan of the Bee Gees for decades; watching the documentary transported me right back to my youth and memories of listening to their albums came flooding back. It reminded me why I love the Bee Gees so much. From humble beginnings, they grew up in the spotlight, fought through the pitfalls of fame, fortune and loss and became one of the most successful and recognized groups of all time. Every time I list, their beautiful voices and exquisite harmonies give me goosebumps!
