Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the event of something happening to me,
There is something I would like you all to see.
It's just a photograph of someone that I knew.

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones.
I keep straining my ears to hear a sound.
Maybe someone is digging underground,
Or have they given up and all gone home to bed,
Thinking those who once existed must be dead.

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones.

In the event of something happening to me,
There is something I would like you all to see.
It's just a photograph of someone that I knew.

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?

Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones.

Overall Meaning

The song "New York Mining Disaster 1941" by the Bee Gees is a haunting and mysterious track that tells the story of a trapped miner trying to communicate with the outside world. The opening lines, "In the event of something happening to me, there is something I would like you all to see. It's just a photograph of someone that I knew," suggest that the trapped miner is preparing for the worst, and leaving a message for loved ones in case he doesn't make it out alive.

As the song progresses, the miner's desperation grows, with lines like "Maybe someone is digging underground, or have they given up and all gone home to bed," indicating that he is losing hope for a rescue. The repetition of the line "Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?" adds to the sense of urgency, as the miner tries to find anyone who might be able to help him.

The final line, "Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones," is a chilling warning that suggests the situation is more dangerous than it appears, and that any misstep could have catastrophic consequences. Overall, the song is a haunting meditation on the fragility of life and the power of communication in times of crisis.
