Day-O
Beetlejuice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Business friends
I have only known this amazing, amazing man
And his unique daughter for a few months
I don't even know how many
I'd have to check my pay stubs
But, as my guru Otho always says
Day-o!
What?

What's going on Delia?
Are you alright?

Um, haha, uh, I am so sorry
I don't, I don't know what just happened
I meant to say
Me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day-o

Delia?
Do you need to lie down?

No! No, I just need to
Daylight come and me wan' go home
What is happening to me?

Maxie
(Yes?)
On behalf of Delia and myself, I'd just like to say

Work all night on a drink of rum
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Stack banana 'til the morning come, brrah
Daylight come and me wan' go home (ha, crazy house)

Day, me say day-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Come, mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Come, mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Lydia
Call 9-1-1
Wait, why aren't you dancing?

It's like I told you dad
This house is haunted
And the ghosts who live here
Want you out
Barbara, the pig

Who wants bacon?

No! No! I'm a vegan

A beautiful bunch of ripe banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Hide the deadly black tarantula
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Lift six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Maxie
Please, forgive me
If I had known

Chuck, you moron! Don't apologize! We're gonna be rich

What?

What?

I was never gonna invest in your stupid "gated community"
But a genuine haunted house?
It's a goldmine

No!

Do you hear that Delia?
These ghosts are gonna make us a fortune

No, you're supposed to be scared

Lydia, we're so sorry
It didn't work

There's one thing that can still stop him

Lydia, no
You don't know what will happen

I can't keep living like this
Betelgeuse

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy
I'm so glad you changed your mind
You are never gonna regret this

Betelgeuse

We are gonna make such a great team
Give me just one more

Betelgeuse

It's showtime

Stop it

Lydia!

It's our house now, kid

Whoa

Looks like we're not invisible anymore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Beetlejuice's song "Day-O" showcase the chaos and confusion that ensue in the scene. The song is a reference to the traditional Jamaican folk song "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)," famously recorded by Harry Belafonte. In the musical, the character Delia is possessed by Beetlejuice, causing her to sing the lyrics in a frenzied state. The repetition of the line "Daylight come and me wan' go home" suggests the urgency of the situation and the desire to escape. Additionally, the call and response format of the lyrics between Delia and Maxie indicates the manipulation and control that Beetlejuice exerts over them.

The use of the traditional folk song "Day-O" in the scene highlights the theme of cultural appropriation, as the predominantly white characters appropriate a song from black culture. Furthermore, the frenzied singing and dancing can be seen as a form of cultural exploitation, as Delia and Maxie are forced to perform for Beetlejuice's amusement. The song serves to underscore the chaotic and absurd nature of the musical, and adds an element of humor to the scene.

Best part of the video (aside from the song, of course) is how the actors were all able to do the dance number while looking like they didn't WANT to be doing it-- since the ghosts were controlling them. That was probably difficult to do.

@johnny--guitar

Confused, terrified choreographed dance number

@keyrawre

Bob Canada not really its all in the facial expressions

@wickedwitchoftheeast88

I bet they had a right laugh doing this scene 😂
