Lowlands Away
Bella Hardy Lyrics

Jump to: Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lowlands Away
Traditional. From the singing of my father Joe Hardy, and Billy Jolly of Orkney.

I dreamed a dream the other night
Lowlands, lowlands away my John
I dreamed a dream the other night
Lowlands, my lowlands low
My love came to me dressed in white
Lowlands, lowlands away my John
My love came to me dressed in white
Lowlands, my lowlands low

He made no sound, no word he spoke
Lowlands, lowlands away my John
He made no sound, no word he spoke
Lowlands, my lowlands low

The salt seaweed was in his hair
Lowlands, lowlands away my John
The salt seaweed was in his hair
Lowlands, my lowlands low

And then I knew my love was dead
Lowlands, lowlands away my John
And then I knew my love was dead
Lowlands, my lowlands low

I dreamed a dream the other night

Lowlands, lowlands away my John
I dreamed a dream the other night
Lowlands, my lowlands low
Line by Line Meaning

I dreamed a dream the other night
I had a vivid dream recently

Lowlands, lowlands away my John
In a distant place, far from here

My love came to me dressed in white
My beloved appeared before me wearing white clothing

Lowlands, my lowlands low
In the depths of my heart

He made no sound, no word he spoke
He remained silent, not uttering a single word

The salt seaweed was in his hair
His hair was adorned with salty seaweed

And then I knew my love was dead
At that moment, I realized that my love had passed away

I dreamed a dream the other night
Once again, I had a vivid dream recently

Lowlands, lowlands away my John
In a distant place, far from here

I dreamed a dream the other night
Once again, I had a vivid dream recently

Lowlands, my lowlands low
In the depths of my heart

When I was younger, I had a habit of buying random albums from the record store without knowing anything about the artist. B&S are not really well known in my country, so I just I picked "Fold Your Hands, Child..." because of the album cover and the name of the band, and I have never regretted it. I've since hunted other record stores (and now, online stores) of their other recordings. B&S ranks among my favorite bands of all time. Listening to this NPR mini concert brings so much joy to me.

FYHCYWLAP is really a great album.

Heeey, I'm doing the same with CD's right now. It's so fun to just gamble one euro on an album where the only information you get is non-musical (like the names of the songs, the instruments, pictures and so on) and then experience it later on in a musical way. I can highly recommend! ^.^

@Megadeadpeople

I’d do the same thing, so I can relate! Sometimes I’d even be like “if I didn’t go to the store and browse that day, I wouldn’t have found them!”. I love how a band can change/shape your life, and all it took was a chance/hope it was good!

Same here but luckily B&S was recommended by the record store owner saying “you got to listen to this one” the owner is a big fan of indie pop music

@GrandpaEggMusic

My favorite album of theirs <3

@ImInterestedInApathy808
