In 1958, Ben Nelson joined a doo wop group, The Five Crowns. Later that same year, The Drifters' manager fired the members of the group and replaced them with The Five Crowns, who had performed several engagements with The Drifters. He co-wrote the first hit by the new version of The Drifters, "There Goes My Baby" (1959). He also sang lead, using his birth name, on "Save the Last Dance for Me," a song written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, "Dance With Me," "This Magic Moment," "I Count the Tears," and other The Drifters hits.
In 1960 he left the group after failing to gain a salary increase and a fairer share of the group's royalties. At this point he assumed the more memorable stage name Ben E. King in preparation for a solo career. Remaining on Atlantic, King scored his first solo hit with the stylish, Latin-tinged ballad "Spanish Harlem" (1961). "Stand by Me" was his next recording. "Stand by Me", written by King along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller was voted one of the Songs of the Century by the Recording Industry Association of America. "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem" were named as two of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and were both also given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
King's records continued to place well on the pop charts until 1963, when British pop bands began to dominate the popular music scene. His hits after 1963 were "What is Soul?" (1967), "Supernatural Thing, part 1" (1975), and the re-issue in 1986 of "Stand by Me" following the song's use as the theme music to the movie of the same name.

Sometimes I cry myself to sleep but still I feel the pain
But I was taught without that pain then you won't get no gain
I came up strait up out them trenches and ion feel no shame
They made a diamond in the ghetto
They made a diamond in the ghetto (They made a diamond in my ghetto)
I can go diamond in the ghetto ooh
I can go diamond in the ghetto (I can go diamond in the ghetto)
They made a diamond in the ghetto (They made a diamond in my ghetto)
I can go diamond in the ghetto ooh
I can go diamond in the ghetto (I can go diamond in the ghetto)
I'm from the bottom of the bottom out them trenches
These niggas talkin like they bout it never did shit
If we in beef then keep it street and do not mention it
You come and thug around my people see the differences
Really with the shit these niggas just playing
Gangsta you sent a diss and put yo mans in danger
I'll send a hit and have them young niggas spin yo shit until you dead Gangsta
Fuck a 30 clip we aint leg aiming
Buried guns we got dead bangers
I know some niggas who turnt before we hit our destination
Them same niggas wishing hoping that we never make it
I know my granny praying daily god don't let ''em take me
That's why I tote a stick and I'll blow this bitch without no hesitation
Caught up in this web of deceit from all these lies I received
Losin my people fucked me up cus I never learned how to grieve
I lost my dawg I couldn't believe it lost my heart and couldn't retrieve it
Project baby now I'm shinin like a Diamond when they see me
I lost my nigga to the streets now they don't feel the same
Sometimes I cry myself to sleep but I still feel the pain
But I was taught without the pain then you won't get no gain
I came up strait up out them trenches and ion feel no shame
They made a diamond in the ghetto
They made a diamond in the ghetto (They made a diamond in my ghetto)
I can go diamond in the ghetto ooh
I can go diamond in the ghetto (I can go diamond in the ghetto)
They made a diamond in the ghetto
They made a diamond in the ghetto (They made a diamond in my ghetto)
I can go diamond in the ghetto ooh
I can go diamond in the ghetto (I can go diamond in the ghetto)
Listen to what I tell y'all
I tuck my gun but I'll never tuck my tail hell naw
And all my people know I'll never sell out
Never speak about them times we had to send some shells off
Shots fired man down shots fired man down
Look me in my eyes and you can see the truth
Do you know how it feel to have them demons believe in you
That nigga love me so if you touch me know what he'll do
Trust me this shit will get more ugly then beetle juice
Run a nigga down and really got the heart to see it through
I could but I aint gotta send a hitta this from me to you
And ion trust shit cus niggas switch that's just what people do
I done seen this shit with my 2 eyes what these streets will do
To you

You better play yo cards right this aint no yugiyo
That's why I clutch my rod tight when I'm at the studio

The lyrics of Ben E. King's song "A Star in the Ghetto" express the pain and loss experienced by the singer due to the violence and hardships of life in the ghetto. The line "I lost my nigga to these streets now they don't feel the same" reveals the devastating impact of losing someone to street violence, which has changed the singer's perception of their environment. Despite the pain, the singer acknowledges that without experiencing this pain, there can be no growth or progress, as stated in the line "I was taught without that pain then you won't get no gain." The singer reflects on their upbringing in the trenches and takes pride in rising above the shame associated with it. The chorus emphasizes the resilience and potential for success even in challenging circumstances, referring to the diamond that has been made in the ghetto.
The second verse further explores the realities of life in the ghetto, with the singer expressing frustration with those who pretend to be tough but have never actually experienced the hardships they speak of. The lyrics convey a sense of street authenticity and a warning to not provoke or disrespect the singer and their community, as they have the means to retaliate. The following lines touch on the hopelessness some individuals in the singer's community may feel, as they may resent or envy the singer's success. The lyrics indicate a strong bond with the singer's grandmother and the constant fear of losing their life due to the dangers of the streets.
Overall, "A Star in the Ghetto" reflects on the struggles, pain, and loss experienced in the ghetto, but also highlights the resilience, strength, and potential for success that can be found even in challenging circumstances.
