Boxing
Ben Folds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Howard, the strangest thing
Has happened lately
When I take a good swing
And all my dreams
They pivot and slip
I drop my fists and they're back
Laughing Howard
My intention's become not to lose what I've won
Ambition has given way to desperation and I
Lost the fight from my eyes

[Chorus]
Boxing's been good to me, Howard
Now I'm told, you're growing old
The whole time you knew
In a couple of years I'd be through
Has boxing been good to you?

Howard, now I confess I'm scared and lonely and tired
They seem to think I'm made of clay
Another day, not cut out for this
I just know what to say, I say

[Chorus]

Well sometimes I punch myself as hard as I can
Yelling nobody cares hoping someone will tell me how
Wrong I am

[Chorus]

Has boxing been good
Has boxing been good to you?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ben Folds Five's song, 'Boxing' paint a vivid picture of a boxer who has lost his motivation and drive. The singer describes how he has lost his will to win, as his 'ambition has given way to desperation.' He acknowledges he is 'scared and lonely and tired' and seems to be at the mercy of his opponents. The lyrics are emotive, with the boxer feeling like he is fighting a losing battle against time and his own limitations. He admits to being overwhelmed and unsure of his future, which he seems to believe is bleak.

The chorus of the song is a direct exchange between the singer and Howard, who is referenced throughout the song. Though the singer asks whether boxing has been good to Howard, the question really rings true for himself. In the chorus, the singer seems to be questioning whether boxing was the right choice for him, considering that he is 'scared and lonely and tired.' The repeated phrase throughout the chorus, 'Boxing's been good to me, Howard' suggests that the boxer is trying to convince himself, and Howard, that he has made the right choice. However, the underlying theme of the song seems to be one of doubt and regret.

Overall, the song seems to explore the complexities of success and failure in the boxing arena, which is likely an allegory for life in general. The fighter is questioning whether his success was worth it, and whether continuing to box is a good idea given how much he has lost along the way. Ultimately, the lyrics of 'Boxing' seem to offer a poignant reflection on the perils of striving for greatness, and the cost that comes with it.

It’s just great musicianship, I feel like Ben Folds’ songwriting skills are another level.

I would agree, he's always been on my short list of greatest songwriters, probably top ten, or if not top ten just barely missing it, and that's pretty high praise considering how many amazing songwriters there are/have been. To me, he' just has that total package. I consider him what I like to call a "melody machine" where it seems like he could write a great melody in his sleep! Writes great music in general, specifically for the piano, great lyrics to fit the great melodies, and is also extremely versatile in the sense that he can write these really upbeat, kind of silly songs with legitimately funny lyrics. but can also write these big emotional, tear jerking, heart string pulling type songs. As a fellow songwriter who can't do any of that very well, I realize how special of a talent he is

@QuincyKane

Ben, you're an amazing songwriter :)

@Gadzooki

Man I'm about to say something bad about my favorite musician an amazing orchestra, but this song doesn't need orchestration, it's perfect as a piano piece. Sorry Ben, it's still haunting and beautiful, thanks for the hug years ago past gig.

@Jayne_Maya

Still love it ❤️

Hell of an orchestra

@matgee8892

I currently have tickets to Ben Folds and WASO on my desk. It's many months away but is one of those things keeping me going.

@andretheshadow

I saw him with the local symphony orchestra where I live, and it was goddamn fantastic. A bargain at twice the price. Enjoy!
