Body & Soul
Benny Carter Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My heart is sad and lonely
For you I sigh, for you dear only
Why haven't you seen it
I'm all for you body and soul

I spend my days in longing
And wondering why it's me you're wronging
I tell you I mean it
I'm all for you body and soul

I can't believe it
It's hard to conceive it
That you'd turn away romance
Are you pretending
It looks like the ending
Unless I could have just one more chance to prove, dear

My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for just the taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

My life a wreck you're making

You know I'm yours for the very taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

For those who aren't familiar with this recording, it was arranged by Benny Carter for this 1961 release, based upon Coleman Hawkins' 1939 classic. The blues influenced alto solo @0:49 is by Phil Woods. Charlie Rouse (I loved his early '60s work) follows with a bop-ish tenor solo @1:07. @1:33 Carter jumps in with a brief tenor solo featuring some snazzy double-timing, but it's The Hawk on tenor who has the longest and final solo starting @2:00. He plays this solo as a more forceful and contemporary interpretation of his original.
For many years, this was my quintessential version of Body and Soul. Then I heard Dexter Gordon's version, and that changed everything...forever.
