Idaho
Benny Goodman and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Away beyond the hills in Idaho
Where yawning canyons greet the sun
As it smiles above the trees in Idaho
To say another night is done
Warm summer winds toss the waving grain
Calling me back to my home again
To dream sweet memories of long ago
Beyond the hills in Idaho

I hear this song about 20 years ago and as a big band jazz fan it blew me away. A novelty song with the crooner divine Dick Haymes ...trying... to insert sweet lyrics in what has to be one of the hardest swinging songs of the entire era. This song is a knock down drag out exhibition of Benny's 1940s Columbia Records big band and in my opinion, has one of Goodman's absolute best solos.

Never heard of this tune before hearing Ella Fitzgerald quote the line, "Away back home in Idaho" in the middle of her epic and famous long scat chorus on "How High The Moon" in the 1966 performance in Stockholm. Yep, this is the tune to which she was referring.

I wondered if this would be the same song called "Idaho" that the Four Seasons recorded around 1969, but it's not. The Four Seasons song has such a nostalgic, retro sound that I wouldn't be surprised if it was an older song. It's just not this one.
