Broken & Ugly
Beth Hart Lyrics

She don't howl when I'm screamin' my songs
I cuss, I drink, I lie, I spit,
Guess I really don't give a shit
Broken and ugly yes I am
Still I feel good divin' in Mama
I'm runnin' again- odelay
Down in Alabama where I'm wanted in jail
I'm broke I'm smoked out and passed out on the bar
Then I took all the money and your grandma's car
Broken and ugly yes I am
Still I look good divin' in Mama
I'm runnin' again- Odelay
Do what ya do say what ya say
Don't waste no time on yesterdays
Cash in your ticket to ride
Don't let them talk you into walkin'
Into no one else's shoes
Don't be no sucker in line
The lyrics of Beth Hart's song Broken & Ugly describe the singer's lifestyle, which is characterized by excessive drinking, foul language, and an unbothered attitude towards societal norms. She talks about how her dog is the only one who really understands her, and how even though she may be viewed as broken and ugly by others, she feels good diving into the deep end ("divin' in Mama"). The singer is on the run, hiding out in Alabama where she's wanted in jail, and she's broke and passed out on the bar.
The chorus reiterates that the singer is broken and ugly, but she looks good diving in, which can be interpreted as her not caring about what others think of her, and going all in anyway. She encourages listeners to embrace who they are and not waste time on the past - "cash in your ticket to ride". The singer warns against conforming to others' expectations and not being "a sucker in line".
Overall, the lyrics of Broken & Ugly paint a picture of a rebellious, nonconformist character who doesn't care what others think of her and lives life on her own terms.
