Soul Shine
Beth Hart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you can't find the light
That guides you through a cloudy day
When the stars ain't shining bright
And it feels like you've lost your way
When those candle light of home
Burn so very far away
Well you got to let your soul shine
Just like my daddy used to say

He used to say the soulshine
It's better than sunshine
It's better than moonshine
Damn sure better than rain
Hey now people don't mind
We all get this way sometimes
Got to let your soul shine
Shine 'til the break of day

I grew up thinkin' that I had it made
Gonna make it on my own
Life can take the strongest man
And make him feel so alone
Now and then I feel a cold wind
Blowin' through my aching bones
I think back to what my daddy said
He said, boy, in the darkness before the dawn

He used to say the soulshine
It's better than sunshine
It's better than moonshine
Damn sure better than rain
Hey now people don't mind
We all get this way sometimes
Got to let your soul shine
Shine 'til the break of day

Sometimes a man can feel this emptiness
Like a woman has robbed him of his very soul
A woman too, god knows, she can feel like this
But hey, when your world seems cold
You got to let your spirit take control

He used to say the soulshine
It's better than sunshine
It's better than moonshine
Damn sure better than rain
Hey now people don't mind
We all get this way sometimes
Got to let your soul shine
Shine 'til the break of day

He used to say the soulshine
It's better than sunshine
It's better than moonshine
Damn sure better than rain
Hey now people don't mind
We all get this way sometimes

Got to let your soul shine
Shine 'til the break of day

Overall Meaning

The song "Soul Shine" by Beth Hart is about finding light and hope in dark times. The opening lines describe a moment of feeling lost and alone, when it seems like the world is shrouded in clouds and there is no guiding star to follow. Beth Hart speaks of the comfort and wisdom she found in her father's words, reminding her to let her "soul shine" - a light that is stronger and more enduring than any physical source of illumination.

The chorus repeats this message, emphasizing the power of the soul to bring light and warmth even in the darkest times. Hart speaks from personal experience, describing moments of doubt and despair when she thought she had everything figured out and then found herself struggling. She recalls her father's words bringing her comfort and guidance, knowing that even in difficult times, she has the strength inside to shine and persevere. The song ends with a final declaration of this truth, urging listeners to let their own souls shine until the break of day.

I first heard this song after attempting suicide years and years ago. I can honestly say it was my swan song as I climbed out of the darkness and into much brighter days. Today, I listen to this song and feel immense gratitude for being the soundtrack to getting my life together and finding my own soul shine. Thank you Beth for being a light in this world through your own darkness and inspiring many.

I have a song that means as much to me. "There's a River" by Steve Winwood helped me through some dark times. "Soulshine" is a wonderful song. Thank you for sharing your story. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am so very thankful your attempt failed. While I don't know you I know the world is better with you in it. The world needs more people like yourself who aren't afraid to admit they have "fucked up" I hope your soul shines bright

After my addiction issues and my recovery..trying so hard to feel normal again.. this LITERALLY touches my soul

Hang in there Tammy. No matter what, just don't pick up. Don't put yourself in situations that will make it easy. Because all it takes is one time and your off to the races again. I got clean and sober in 1986. I've been thru several deaths, nasty break up, pet deaths, job loss, lost all my possessions in 2010 with the market recession. And I felt like I was in the lowest lowest valley. For me, I called out to God to get me thru. Just know, no matter what, you are never alone and you are loved. The battleground plays out in the mind. You have the power to shut that nonsense off. Just tell it to get. Don't entertain it. One day you will have Peace inside. I hope you have good people in your life to lean on. Take care.
