Well Well
Beth Hart / Joe Bonamassa Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I woke up this morning
With a smile on my face
I threw out those stones
That stood in my way
And I put on a new pair
Of hard walking shoes
I woke up this morning
Laughing the blues
Woke up laughing the blues

When the talking on the TV
Tells me I should be scared
I don't let it overwhelm me
I know that joy will be there
Behind every tear
It might take a while
Might as well smile

I go to the corner
And buy me a drink
I say to the man
"This shit helps me think"
He says "who ya fooling?
I know your type!!
A dead woman walking"
Maybe he's right
I sure hope he ain't right

And when the preacher on the TV
Tells me I should be scared
I don't let it overtake me
I know that faith will be there
Behind every fear
It might take a while
Might as well smile

I woke up this morning
With a smile on my face
Without a warning
My fear was erased
So I put on a new pair
Of good walking shoes
I woke up this morning
Laughing the blues
'Cause I got nothing to lose

And if the darkness brings the thunder
And my brother turns me away
I will turn and love another
There will be light in the shade
And that's where I'll lay
It might take a while
Might as well smile

It might take a while
Might as well smile

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Beth Hart's "Might As Well Smile" is about waking up and choosing to be positive despite facing obstacles. The singer throws out the stones that stood in their way and puts on a new pair of shoes to go forward. They wake up laughing the blues, indicating that they are resilient and don't let negative emotions take control of their life.

The second stanza switches focus to the TV news and how it tries to make people feel scared. However, the singer doesn't allow the overwhelming negative news to affect them. They believe that joy will always be there, even behind every tear. The singer advises that even though it might take a while to find the positive in the negative, might as well smile.

Well well gettin to know you so well
Well well gettin to know you so well
I've heard some talk in the neighborhood bout a good time somebody's havin'
They don't know
They just don't know the half about it
And that there's so much to it
And what they're sayin
They don't know what we're knowin
Never gonna catch up
Never get goin
Well well gettin to know you so well
Well well gettin to know you so well
As long as I can see its you and me alone together
It feels so good
Lord I feel so good about it
If its feelin good inside of one
Nothin ever matters
Lovin you doin what I'm lovin
Lovin me lovin what ya do
Well well gettin to know you so well
Well well gettin to know you so well
Don't you hear me talkin to you Joe?
Come on
Well well
Well well gettin to know you so well
Well well gettin to know you so well
I heard some talkin in the neighborhood bout a good time somebody's havin
But they don't know
They just don't know the half about it
And that there's so much to it
What they're sayin
They don't know but we know it
Never gonna catch us
They'll never get goin
Well well gettin to know you so well
Well well gettin to know you so well
Well well gettin to know you so well
Well well gettin to know you so well
